is that "20%" due to how SEO works?
or because more people may be going to #1 instead of #2?
there is another website above mine... (mine is newer)

It's because position one receives more traffic than the second - simple as that.

Ranking on web site name isn't relevant. You want Google to rank for your key words. SEO is always important. It is not only backlinks (off page) also the site itself (on page). If you are working with WordPress, install Yoast SEO plugin to get some guide lines and it is also a good idea to read their blog https://yoast.com/beginners-guide-yoast-seo/

If your website is new and is ranking #2 you should have no problem doing some SEO and getting that to Ranking #1.
It wouldn't cost a whole lot depending on who it is you're competing against, but as a business standpoint it's 100% worth it in the end and anyone who owns a website or is experienced in SEO would agree.

I think you should seek SEO Services for your site. I understand it is already ranking high in Google Search Engine Result Pages. But i am giving you this suggestion because of many reasons.

Continue with SEO on other keywords, the no 2 rank position keyword automatically comes at the first place.
SEO is endless. You always have more keywords to target in your niche and there is always opportunity to grow your business. If you are ranking for one searchterm doesn;t mean that you accomplished all the potential of SEO. Your traffic may always keep growing if you do seo in right way
