Gotcha. I think it might be good to target popular niches with unique content, if I understand correctly?

yes it is ;)
unique content is the key, feed unique to search engine...
it may be old topics, trending or popular topics....just unique content all you need...majorly...
 
one great news that, I modified the content of website and it started to rank in top 4 search result of bing....

and one keyword is on second page on bing....

now 2-3 more keywords are remaining ;)

maybe email some sitemasters in your niche ask them if you can write an article for them and add your link
