SEO isn’t about chasing rankings anymore. It’s about being the authority AI trusts. Links still matter, but brand signals, expertise, and real-world authority are the real game-changers.
SEO used to be “traffic first.” Now it’s “trust first.” AI is taking answers from sources it trusts, not just top pages.
Those who build real authority are winning .. the rest are chasing shadows.
How’s everyone adjusting to this new reality?

I'm doing the same. focusing on content and engagement and it's working

I completely agree with the shift in focus from "traffic first" to "trust first" and building real authority. It's interesting to see how AI is changing the way we approach SEO, and I think it's a great opportunity for those who are willing to adapt. I've been experimenting with creating more in-depth, informative content and engaging with my audience on social media, and I've seen a noticeable increase in trust signals and authority. Can you share more about your content and engagement strategies that are working for you? What types of content have you found to be most effective in building trust with your audience?

I think you've made a very accurate point. It's particularly noticeable in AI results that sites with true "authority" are more visible.

Instead of just chasing backlinks, we're focusing more on demonstrating expertise in content, sharing real experiences, and building brand trust. In short, we're trying to build trust, not just traffic. I believe this will be the winning approach in the long run.

links aren’t dead, they’re just not the only signal anymore. ai systems still need authority mapping. and backlinks are still one of the cleanest authority signals on the web. they just work together now with brand mentions, entity consistency, author signals, behavioral data.

it’s not traffic first vs trust first. traffic was always downstream of trust. we just gamified links for years and forgot the bigger picture.
the adjustment isn’t killing link building. it’s making links support a real brand + real expertise instead of propping up thin pages.

build something worth citing and links + ai visibility follow.

While that’s a great observation . AI bots picks on domains with decent authority. Backlinks helps in building such authority

Totally Agree.
SEO is no longer about ranking pages — it’s about building trust.
Authority, brand signals, and real expertise are the new competitive edge.
Those investing in credibility will win long-term.

AI is taking its own answers: https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2415697122

Content and backlinks from relevant sources are important to be considered by AI at all.

@Torel nailed it - links aren’t dead, they just stopped being a cheat code.

What changed is how they’re weighted + cross validated. If you push links to a thin page with no entity depth, no author footprint, no consistent mentions across the web - AI systems just don’t reinforce it. We’ve tested this on a few projects, clean link stacks + no brand layer = rankings move, AI answers don’t.

The shift for us was simple - build topical clusters that actually map to one entity, keep internal linking tight, push links to the brand + hub pages, not random articles. Once the domain looks like a real thing instead of a traffic farm, links start compounding again instead of just giving temporary boosts.

Interesting take.
When you say real world authority, do you mean things like brand mentions without links?
I am curious how you track this trust signal since it is harder to measure than standard backlinks.

@OptiMaster
yeah, exactly that — brand mentions without links are part of it.
real world authority is basically when your brand exists outside your own site in a consistent way. mentions, discussions, citations, people searching your name directly. not just anchor text links.

you can’t track it with one clean metric like backlinks, but you can approximate it:
- branded search volume in gsc
- unlinked mentions (ahrefs, semrush, google alerts)
- entity signals (knowledge panel, related searches, “people also search for”)
- how often your brand shows up in category + comparison queries
- even llm citations when they happen

it’s more about pattern consistency than a single number. when brand signals, topical depth, and links align, rankings feel more stable and less volatile.

Exactly, links still help, but trust and authority matter more now. Focus on strong content, niche expertise, and real-world signals, and traffic will follow.
