Re-ranking after fixing an over-optimization penalty?

I noticed way too much use of keywords on my site after being stuck on SERPs for a while and having an unrelated page ranking for a KW instead of the proper page.

I have since re-wrote the content and made sure the KWs are all in the right place and are a low %. If I did have a penalty placed on some of the pages, how long would it roughly take for G to lift this now that it isn't over-optimized?

Why don't you check to see if you have any penalties/manual actions in the first place? Do you have WMT installed?

yep, i've got no manual actions. But it's my understanding that some penalties you don't get notified for.
