Ranking for no MS keyword

I was wondering: if I try to rank for "best blue widget" which has let's say 250 monthly searches, then would it help if I try to rank for a related keyword with 0 searches, first?

E.g "cheap best blue widget today" which also has a way lower comp.

Or monthly searches don't matter at all and it's just a matter of relevancy.

Try to find medium volume search keywords...You may get related searches

monthly searches for the traffic you get when you rank.
if you rank for some crap with 0 search volume you have no traffic at all.

That wasn't what I'm looking for. Some people say that if you rank for some keywords, then others will have a much easier time to lift.

If I use dummy keyword( no MS), but related to the niche I'm operating, will it also help ranking easier other much harder KWs?
