monthly search

I was wondering: if I try to rank for "best blue widget" which has let's say 250 monthly searches, then would it help if I try to rank for a related keyword with 0 searches, first? E.g "cheap best blue widget today" which also has a way lower comp. Or monthly searches don't matter at all and...
