Just wanted to give back.
Here to answer questions but I really should ask that maybe even those way smarter than me answer them. All my opinion and what I have seen.
I learned a lot of SEO from guys in this thread. BTB, Tommy, Cash 202, Big Buddy and more and more and more
Here is the quick checklist:
Keyword Research: Use great keyword tool to find all the various "intents" around your keyword.
This list shows intent around keywords - You can use this to do simple keyword research for now on.
Now place these into a Silo Structure:
SILO out your site on paper in depth first! You should have it broken down by topic of course.
My site plan normally looks like this:
1 Homepage
8 Main Silo's - About US - Blog - Cart (if eccomerce)
at least 4 Pages (categories) from each Silo
3-10 blog post from each of those pages
Get your content Cracking:
You will need 100k words easy to fill out this type of Silo Structure. Get all the content writing. (if you order then place the orders... if you write yourself then build site first and then start writing.
I order some content, I write some. Either way there are 3 things I do on every post.
Amazon - I look at the excerpts from books to reword some free awesome copywriting.
Quora - I look at the top few post around my keyword and reword any with up votes for more free copy writing.
Google PPC - I look for descriptions, key phrases, around my keywords PPC ads.
The 3 things about normally give me at least 300 words of content as an opening.
I use custom photos. I have deposit photos (appsumo like 1500 credits for pennies - deal comes 2-3 times a year). I use picmonkey and piktochart to custom make anything else. I have no talent at all - these are just super easy to do.
Site Build Out: Custom Themes - Sometimes but sometimes I just grab a theme on thesis or wp and just redo some of it.
Plugins: I don't have a list but wp slimstat, silo plugin from network, wordfence, smush, etc... normal plugins.
I build a few pages out of the silo. WHY??????? So it looks a little more natural. I don't ever do the same things. I will even look for traffic keywords that are kind of related just to have a mixture of content and keywords.
I create the silo structure with the content but I also make titles myself.

These titles are a bit ugly and obvious. Plus when you use the plugin then you can let it build the pages, then just custom without messing with the permalink structure so all the uRL's are the same but the Title in Google will show up different with that URL.
I then build out 20 - 50 Web 2.0's. Some call it all Parasites.
OH YEAH - I freaking make a series of email addresses and an excel spreadsheet to start keeping up with all these darn url's passwords etc on... Do That FIRST, as soon as you buy the domain.
I normally go fresh domain - my name - then 301 a few towards it. I have bought and built before.
So build the parasites. Take 20 - 30 and hook them up in various IFTT.com accounts to automatically publish your content. Designate this on your list.
etc... I have built this in silo structure before and I have built it out in depth - each silo has its own 50 web 2.0's etc... There is a lot you can do with this, especially with 8 IFTTT accounts and 150 articles on your site and then 50 you can use on web 2.0's
I have blasted some of them with HIGH PR links. I have scrapboxed. Them I tier most stuff.
On the main site I reach out to everyone I can almost everyday. I email blast out about the site. I run promotions and adwords. I look like a frantic webstie owner trying everything. It looks very natural that way - Plus I am most of the time.
This normally works out very well. It also forces you to put enough content on a site that it might actually have a chance to rank on its own.
I publish 10 articles a month - sometimes 3 and sometimes 20.... I switch themes. I do a lot as I don't worry as much as look at what each thing I do does. I publish on LinkedIn about the site. I do a lot to promote it up.
Hope this helps some, any questions just hit me up here. Monetize the site however you want - I have done this with mixture and all have done the same. Some worked and some didn't. Normally more content and more effort and more figuring it out.
