It's quite possible and so far the results aren't that bad at all! :) Keep up the good work and I think if you do as you said that you wouldn't have an issue with increasing your ranking.

When you are fighting on the .com area to move on national fields is in most of the cases a joke :) You can hit their ass really bad if you manage to build a website with a similar number of pages ( it's not the only factor but it's the only impediment I see).

Any keyword that is not english is so much easier to rank for. There is really no comparison, even for keywords with heavy competition in english can be a walk in the park for foreign. Try it out and you will be surprised. The monetization can be a little tricky on some keywords though.
