Have both sites active at once but canonicalise with priority to the NEW site so that there are no issues around dupe content. Let it sit for a few weeks then do a page by page 301 redirect so that each redirected page is 301'd to its corresponding page on the new site. It would be a mistake just to 301 your entire site to your new homepage.


If you're in a hurry then skip the canonical step but still do the page by page 301.

Well, all along, it just never felt like MY brand name and I've decided that I want to migrate the site to a domain with my own company name that I've came up with.

BUT I want to bring the authority of the expired domain with me so I can continue to rank where i do now.

With that said......

QUESTION: If I do a permanent 301 redirect from old domain to new domain, will the new domain also permanently inherit the old domain's authority in the search engines? Or would I have to expect a temporary drop in rankings until I establish the new domain?

i would say sometimes you can go away with it but sometimes both sites die off on rankings
you can always find a way to get back tho
