    A couple years ago I purchased a expired domain with 35 DA and most importantly it had a very strong link profile with branded anchors.

    It was the type of domain that could be used in any niche because the brand name was very general, so I inherited this name.

    I also inherited the authority of this domain which gave me an immediate advantage in the SERPs.

    So what's my problem?

    Well, all along, it just never felt like MY brand name and I've decided that I want to migrate the site to a domain with my own company name that I've came up with.

    BUT I want to bring the authority of the expired domain with me so I can continue to rank where i do now.

    With that said......

    QUESTION: If I do a permanent 301 redirect from old domain to new domain, will the new domain also permanently inherit the old domain's authority in the search engines? Or would I have to expect a temporary drop in rankings until I establish the new domain?

    The rankings will transfer over as soon as google processes the 301

    If you have lots of rankings for internal pages then I suggest you do it like this;

    Have both sites active at once but canonicalise with priority to the NEW site so that there are no issues around dupe content. Let it sit for a few weeks then do a page by page 301 redirect so that each redirected page is 301'd to its corresponding page on the new site. It would be a mistake just to 301 your entire site to your new homepage.

    If you're in a hurry then skip the canonical step but still do the page by page 301.

    That's what I wanted to hear! Thank you.

    I do have a ton of rankings for internal pages. Probably over 200 of these by now. Thank you very much for pointing this out. I assumed that by 301 redirecting the old domain that all of the internal pages would redirect to the new domain as well, but now I see why it wouldn't work quite that easily. You might have just saved me with that bit of advice...

    I tried this a couple of years ago but it did not work for me
    i would say sometimes you can go away with it but sometimes both sites die off on rankings
    you can always find a way to get back tho

    I bought the domain through godaddy auctions for $250 nearly three years ago (I let it sit for a while before using it). Nowadays with the increased interest in pbn I think the same expired domain would go for around $500 in auction
