A new wave of PayPal invoice scams have been using cryptocurrency-related businesses as their disguise.
If you use PayPal then you should be careful not to become a victim of this scam yourself!
How the PayPal invoice scam works:
Alongside the communication is a phone number that the victim is asked to contact in order to dispute the pending charge. This scam is highly effective in its social engineering strategy as the email is, after all, a legitimate one does come from PayPal directly.
What the email looks like
Thus the whole incident is lent a smokescreen of persuasiveness. Victims who call the number to dispute the charge will put into direct contact with the scammers.
So at this point, there will be several scam attempts open to the scammer, for example:
1. Requesting personal information to authenticate your account
2. Requesting that the individual downloads necessary trojan software
And even more that can cause financial damage!
Tips to protect yourself:
• Double-check contact details and URLs.
• Be wary of any unexpected/unauthorized charges that come in via email even if the email itself comes from a legitimate company such as PayPal.
• Use your common sense and never click on links or call numbers.
• In doubt contact PayPal directly.
One more reason to distance yourself from PayPal in my opinion. Bad actors are creating PayPal accounts and then sending invoices to other random PayPal users.
It seems phishing/social engineering just keeps more effective.
