Hey BHW ,

I’ve got a new website (~4 months old). Everything was fine — Google Search Console set up, content updated, initial Moz spam score low.

Suddenly today, Moz shows a spam score of 59!
No link buying, no shady SEO, mostly unique content.
Has anyone seen a sudden spike like this? Could it be:
  • Domain history?
  • Low-quality backlinks?
  • Moz algorithm update?
  • Hidden technical issues?
Would love any advice or similar experiences — trying to figure out if it’s just Moz being strict or something I need to fix ASAP.

Thanks in advance!

This happened to me a few times. It was due to spam links that I did not create. There is nothing you can do you ASAP, you can't remove spam links. They go away overtime. If you can make quality links that balances out spam links and score goes down. It can also go up due to spam content, automated content posting from other news sites for example.

A sudden increase in Moz spam score can happen even if your site is clean. It may be because of old domain history, some bad backlinks, or Moz updating their system. Check your backlinks and remove or disavow spam links. Also review your content. If everything looks good, it’s likely just a temporary tool issue, not a real problem from Google.

Don’t panic—Moz spam score isn’t Google. Sudden spikes are common due to their updates or new link data. Check your backlinks for junk, but if GSC is clean and rankings are stable, you’re fine. Focus on real signals, not Moz metrics.

Dont worry about that shitty metric :)

Your Moz Spam Score can spike suddenly, even if your website is completely "clean." This could be due to the domain's past history, certain low-quality backlinks, or Moz system updates. You should check your backlinks and either remove or disavow them.
where are you from and do you know some tech?

if its your website, connect your domain to ahref through webmasters by logging in through gmail.
you will get the report of all the backlinks that your website has and which backlinks are harmful.
It is free.
