I'm not going to post in the "shit list" section for either of these 2 companies being that their p.r. goons will jump in. So I'll at least share my experiences so if you're in the market for hosting/VPS you can add this to your research.

Disclaimer: I know how to run WordPress sites and have for years now. I don't use nulled themes or plugins and WordFence and lock down all my sites. So before these companys' damage control stooges get on this thread and make their cases (if they do at all) just know I tested with other servers and they worked fine. I'm not going to drop the names of the ones I use now because I don't want people thinking I'm an affiliate of theirs.

1. Hostwinds.

Total scam operation as far as I'm concerned. I split tested plenty of websites on their servers in comparison to other shared VPS plans with other companies. Here's what happened:

Stupid number of hacks.
God damn, I can't count how many times I had to start from scratch with the sites I put on their machine.

Compartmentalization.
None of their "departments" talk to one another. One of the hacks had me opening tickets that involved both billing and technical support. Neither of which talked to each other nor knew what the hell the other was doing which resulted in a week's worth of confusion and my sites being down. They didn't even look at the same ticket or dashboard. They had to ask me what the ticket from the other department read. It was pathetic.

No matter what stooge they get on this thread to say otherwise I'll laugh at them because I know for a fact it'll be damage control. And they know it.

The split test.
Whenever I had hacks (I had about 5 big ones during the course of a year) I'd contact them and they'd insist it was my installations. "It's your fault, we're not developers." So I literally put the same installations, themes, plugins, all of it on another VPS just to see if it was my stuff or theirs. All of which by the way were light as hell and barely had any traffic running to 'em.

The wp installations and other installations worked just fine on servers with other companies.

Stupid unprofessional.
During one of my hacks I was working with one of their reps, who knew absolutely nothing about hosting. She was some minimum wage earning, hood rat in "Oklahoma" on the phone literally having sex, muting the phone between responses. I know this for fact because in between one of the responses she forgot to mute the phone.

I know there are probably people who are happy with Hostwinds, and if you're spending hundreds or thousands a month with them I'd hope you are. But basically to me they're a huge outsourced network of people willing to do jobs they know nothing about for cheap. I don't believe their machines are even in the U.S. I mean they might be but it would surprise me if they are.

2. 1and1 Hosting.
Another total scam. I was just hacked today and every "technician" I talked to had no idea what the hell was going on. I had all my white hat sites crash and all they said was "Apache broke and we don't know how." These goofballs make believe they're bigger than what they are. I literally have the same wp installations on another server, a DMCA ignored, cheap, offshore server and my pages with them load faster than these idiots. Unless you're spending a million bucks a month with these clowns you're wide open to all kinds of hacks as well. Kind of weird for a company that does so much business and has all the experts and super support.

Conclusion:
I literally had less issues back in 2012 when I was with Hostgator and Bluehost. I've had to move to VPS's due to scaling up and didn't want to stick with companies all belonging to the same owners especially when after the buyout a flood of bad reviews started coming in. I'm actually an easy-to-please customer but I'm not about to be told it's my wp installs/plugins constantly when I have the same installations, down to the node on another VPS and it works fine.

P.S. Most of my posts thus far have been negative on BHW even though this forum has literally changed my life for the better. So I promise my next posts will be positive advice and a few free bots. Lol.

Thanks for sharing your reviews. I'm assuming you have no current recommendations for hosts with good service?

Posting mostly negative threads is fine so long as they're providing value to the community. ;)

Looking forward to your next thread with the giveaway. :)

One company I'd recommend is OneHostCloud. Not affiliated with them in any way. I actually had to dig through Google to find them. I have a DMCA ignored-based pbn and so far so good. And thanks for your reply!

@Hostwinds is this true? How can I ensure I am always put through to her when I need support? Do you offer video chat?

Thanks for the feedback, very helpful for those who wanna just start with a hosting, better leave these bad ones. I choose a namecheap hosting, any thoughts?

Let me add to this.

GoDaddy sucks. I have had more problems out of them than non-problems, and they will spam you to death the second you sign up for an account, and sell off your contact information so others spam you to death as well.

LiquidWeb was awesome when they had shared hosting. They sold their shared hosting division to Deluxe Hosting, and it went to absolute garbage. Customer support and live chat are hellishly slow and incompetent. To give you an idea of how mismanaged they are, there is no feature in their UI that lets expired domains disappear from my list of domains. I've got domains that expired 18 months ago still showing in my control panel. Their billing processes are also godawful.

Web Hosting Ninja (sold here on BHW) worked okay for me for a short time. Then they sent out a mass email that was an attempt at an upsell, and the email was titled something along the lines of "Your site has been hacked!" and came from them, so I almost had a stroke while opening the email. I was very unhappy, and have since stopped using their services.

The three hosts I currently am using that I have not had any issues with at all are: Namecheap, EBN, and Servikus (thank you @littlewebdragon).

One simple fix could have been getting them to change the IP. Your ip that you were on could have already been listed on a system that was easy to hack so those guys that hack sites tend to keep coming back to the same IP.

Also could have looked into the traffic logs and times that the changes were being made to see if from the same IP or location each time if so then block that.

Next there are a few plugins that could have been installed on the site to help with that.

Hope you find a host that works out for you.

I was always skeptical about NameCheap hosting as I've seen 50/50 positive to negative reviews but I'm open to hear if they do good business or not.

Namecheap has been awesome for me so far. 1and1, those guys are the biggest scammers ever. I would recommend anything (including $1 hosting) over 1and1. Their customer service is trash. They'll continue to charge you unless you get a written/recorded confirmation the account has been canceled. Don't bother trying to remove the credit card. They'll renew services without your permission and then threaten collections if you don't pay.

1and1 is the worst company in the world. once they confiscated my domain, i had worked on that website for 4 months and had invested ton of money and hardwork, i requested them alot but in the end everything was lost.

I strongly recommend SEO's to not fall for their $1 domain or $1 hosting, it will cost you much more in long run. They will keep on charging your Credit/Debit card without any notification. I had to replace my debit card from the bank just to stop them from charging my card.

Their support sucks too, they always have one line response and none of their representative gives a shit about your website or business.

NEVER EVER PURCHASE ANYTHING FROM 1AND1

Always use paypal for transactions and it's easy to cancel the reoccurring payment.

I have hosting with 4 different providers, @littlewebdragon I bought 3 year package from for a client, binned the client so will use that myself.
I also have reseller hosting with @HudsonWebServices and am very impressed with both their hosting and customer service.

EIG companies I avoid like the plague.

Don't remember what happened, but I wasn't happy with hostwinds as well.

And 1and1, haha we all know that.

I can add my 2 cents.

I recommend HawkHost. Simple, feature rich, cheap and no downtime for 1.5 years. I paid 60$ for 2 year hosting. My 100k per month site did not have any problem ever. Here is speed for homepage with 60 posts. I have tried Namecheap (good but slow, but I like their support). HostGator is not bad, but terrible support and for that price shit. Siteground is terrible. Tried their 60$ per month hosting and it did not hold 6000 visits per day lol.

HistWinds support is pretty shit, although every once in a while they do actually help out.

The worst host I've ever dealt with was called JDR Host or something and they were selling on BHW lile 4 or so years ago. They were advertising off shore hosting for $8 per year or something ridiculous like that, than banned me and deleted all my content (had no backup of this site, mind you) because my site white was getting 80 hits per day was getting comment spam, saying I've "caused them enough trouble".

My top three pick from hostings is Namecheap, Hostgator and Poweruphosting.

HostGator is overpriced and huge, definitely shouldn't be on your list. NameCheap is okay but you can get better for the price. Not sure what purposes you're using these for, but you might want to take a look at @Diplomat 's Priority Prospect service - it will be way cheaper than all of these and they have the best support.

Thanks for the mention. We specialize in PBN hosting really.
