My Experience With With 2 Big Time Hosting Companies

My 2 cents,

A2hosting, been with them for 2 years now, they are really good!

Thanks for the post. I stopped using 1&1 a long time ago always found them a problem. I also use Bluehost for smaller work, they are OK most of the time but if something does go wrong its a little bit of hassle to sort out.

HistWinds support is pretty shit, although every once in a while they do actually help out.

The worst host I've ever dealt with was called JDR Host or something and they were selling on BHW lile 4 or so years ago. They were advertising off shore hosting for $8 per year or something ridiculous like that, than banned me and deleted all my content (had no backup of this site, mind you) because my site white was getting 80 hits per day was getting comment spam, saying I've "caused them enough trouble".

Haha indeed I still have a Hostwinds account but will ditch that soon.
I signed up with a black Friday offer sometime, and literally at least 5 times or more they suspended my site for non payment.

I had a PayPal agreement for the discounted price, the discount was removed and then the price was higher than the PayPal agreements I always owed money.
I told them to fix it and they said they Did but of course it took bunch of more "it's fixed" to finally be resolved.

Always use paypal for transactions and it's easy to cancel the reoccurring payment.
1and1 will "renew the service", send you a bill and proceed to threatening you. They will even tell you it was for your own good.

I didnT think other companies could renew a paypal reoccurring payment?

They won't renew via PayPal. They will just choose to continue your service on their side. Then they will send you a bill and say you owe them or they will send you to collections. You'll call them and they'll act like you should be greatful they saved you and kept your services running (without your permission).

In other words, they don't need your payment info on file. They'll just decide you want their services, and then send you a bill. Most businesses will take removal of payment info and no renewing as a hint that services are no longer needed. 1and1 will not give a damn about that. They make it almost impossible to cancel. When you remove your payment info and do not renew, they renew it anyways and collect with threats. Think of it like getting robbed after being lured with promises that sound too good to be true.

If the sites earning fairly decent money just move it over to a VPS. Can't go wrong with Digital Ocean $5 VPS, never had an issue of maxing it out yet.

I can't discuss the situation due to reaching a settlement, but I don't recommend 1&1.
I don't recommend bluehost because they make a backup of my site, and served it up, so any updates to the site weren't served up publicly.
