Hi everyone,

I am reviewing a website which have two h1 tags, no h2 tags, seven h3 tags and two h4 tags on its homepage. The website is in html5 so its ok to have multiple h1 tags.
But Is it bad for SEO as there seem to have to hierachy.

I prefer to have just one h1 tag on each page that points out most important thing on that particular page and then use other hX tags for different headings that you have.

It depends. If the H tags are full of optimized keywords and are obviously meant to target a keyword, they'll do more harm than good.

But if they're structural and part of a overall theme structure, then it should not be any problem .

The website has to have only one H1 tag.

If you want to make use of a similarly important text and have already used that to have it inside the H1, put it in the page title. Google will decide what's more relevant and display it on the results.

H2 should be about slicing your information in sections, highlighting the most important ones.

H3 can be put inside those sections, in their paragraphs, while explaining a rather important feature, but related to the H2 mainly. Or it could be something general that applies to the whole category/page and is found easily around your page.

H4 is less important and I personally hardly ever use it.

Just don't stuff your keyword that much in the titles you will be OK.

I wouldn't worry, just make sure there's one of each. I've found that duplicate H-tags are okay as long as the others are present such as "H1, H2, H3, H3, H4". One other major thing that I've found with H-tags is they've got to be relevant to your site and topics not just for keywords, make sure you don't stuff them in. Partial key parts of keywords work just fine as long as they make sense.

The website is html5 , I have read that having 2 h1 tags is ok. The problem is that there is no h2 tags.
And it's not structured.
The h3 tags contain mini banners

That does not sound like any site I would set up.

I never have more than on <h1> tag on a page. Ever.

No <h2> tags but you have <h3> tags does not make much sense to me either.

I would think you'll have some issues getting this page to perform for you in the SERPS as it is currently structured.

The most important this is Title, H1 and H2 tag + Full SEO optimization, so it all depends on many factors

Its quite hard to explain without showing you the website. The h1 tag contain the logo and the company name. Then there is the H4 tag which than seven H3 tags which all contain images and text within those images.

The H1 containing the logo & the company name is a big mistake.

You need to make a lot of changes and have H2 tags before you star having H3 and H4.

Can you elaborate? My Shopify theme also has the logo only between H1 tags. Is that bad?

I read somewhere that if in the h1 html code inform google it's a logo, then it is fine. So I am confused. Is h1 tag should be text only?

While we at it. In Wordpress, would you guys advice to remove the h3 tag from widget titles ?

I think that the chances of Google giving a stuff what h tags you use are minimal these days. Even if it counts as a ranking factor, it will be like 1% or something.

Times have moved on.

The H1 tag should contain your brand, your motto and/or the keyword you're targetting ( the one that matters the most, even if you will never rank on 1st page for it ).

There's absolutely no purpose on having the Logo as the H1 tag. The Logo can have an alt title tag mentioning the brand and it's fine. The H1 tag and the the Page title, on your home page, are very important.

H1 Tag. (Only 1 Needed, I see people sometime use 2, but 1 will do).

H2 Tag (Depends, No Restrictions on Number).

H3 Tag (Depends, No Restrictions on Number).

Yes. Htags needs to be focused on your page content, not on widgets etc. remove them, and make the interesting and relevant for the content.

HTML5 holds that you can use more than one H1 due to the unique document outline for that code. This is because each H1 should be put in an article tag which is supposed to separate the content into separate pieces. However, last time I checked the two major search engines (G and B) still suggest you have only one H1 per page. I would stick with a single one personally since I don't trust that the search engines have caught up with this yet. Just because the latest coding allows you to do something doesn't mean it should be used for all situations.

I prefer only one H1 and H2 Tags...You can add multiple H3 and H4 Tags..H1 and H2 tags are important for your ranking
