Monetizing chrome extension with ask.com toolbar

Hi. I have noticed that there are a lot of chrome extensions that offer ask search as alternative to google or they put it on the new tab page. I wonder if this is a method for monetizing their extensions or they just like ask (which has a little probability). Thank you.

yes, there is affiliate program.
but not sure how to join.
seems only choosen can join in askcom search solutions (this looks strange isnt it?)

Yes that's weird as I can't find anything about that in the web. It's a dark forest as I understand.
