I just dont understand why you choose the exact word in the first screen and not the phrase one?

I allways used the phrase one whats the difference?

You are missing some huge points. I might do the proper tutorial in the Jr VIP section or something later on. However, you really need to explain about determining the competition, not for me of coarse but for the people who have difficulties doing this (98% of the thread viewers). If you are going to end up editing the tutorial, you should really go in depth about the competitors onsite SEO.

Good luck

Could you please share this gem for us all?

It seems than not properrly determined competition might ruin a lot of work afterwards.

Also, if there are other important missing points, could you at least point us to them, or explain them if you feel that generous?

Thank you in advance for your answer!

I have questions about this step

Inurl:"keyword" intitle"keyword"

When I do this I only get 3-10 results for my top 2 keywords? Did I do it wrong or does that mean that neither myself or my competitors have good on page seo?

Thanks for this information. This is what I was looking for.

When people say to me "do keyword research" im thinking what for exactly? I know my site, and I know what keywords are best to find my site, so why do i need to research into keywords?

Could someone clarify the purpose of finding keywords that return a low number of google results? The only thing that comes to mind is, if i can find a keyword/sentance that returns a low number of results on google, then I should write a unique article based on it, eg: intitle:"How to Apply Makeup to Dry Skin" returns only 5 results on G.co.uk so my thinking is that if I write an article about it and ensure I follow SEO strategies such as using "How to Apply Makeup to Dry Skin" in the title and also in the URL, I could/should get a good G result?

Or am I not seeing the obvious reason?

Neil.

Your on the right mind frame.... you should do keyword research, because if you just write a article and you have only put keywords that are tough, then your article will never be shown. So basically you do your keyword research so you can find keywords that many people are searching for (you determine what many is....500 or 10K or more), and you do the competition research of the keyword so that when you have written the article and you have added the keyword in the title and other places in the article like (h1,h2,h3, in bold, italics, underline) google will know that - that article is about "keyword" so when someone types it in, your website will rank. Take for example sex. You can go ahead and write a article about sex. But its very unlikley that anyone will ever find it, if you just post it on your blogspot or your new domain because its a very competitive term and more authority sites such as wikipedia will always be on first page for the term.

Its a typo right?
You mean inurl+intitle, not inurl+inurl ? I am just wondering because author wrote inurl+inurl and I thought it was a typo. But when somepne else posted it I thought maybe its part of the research along with inurl+intitle ... ?

Sorry about the error. It should be

Code:
intitle:"keyword" inurl"keyword"

or

Code:
inurl:"keyword" intitle:"keyword"

Yes that would be great. Like how actual strong are these top 10 links and what kind of methods do you need to beat them.

Also:

whats the deal with &990 thing:
it says 53000 results but when you do it and get only 74 pages its actually only 740 (74 pages *10 results) results???????? I am lost here? So where are the rest of those 53.000???

Google Only shows the first 1000 results (100 pages) it finds are most relevant, but on its data base it might have much more then the 1000 results it can show. The lower this figure is the lower the amount of websites google finds to be relevant for that keyword = it will be easier for you to come in and rank for the keyword.

Last question about last step and doing top10 results inspection:

Do you still put your keyword in quotes there? Because people searching for that keyword will most likely be NOT putting in quotes, so in order to see which the real top 10 competitors are you need to remove the quotes doing that last step?

When doing research of the first 10 or 20 showing results you don't put quotes.

Thanks

PS: that travis thing is basicly the same thing as market samurai?

Correct!

I did not write a complete guide to SEO... this is a simple guide for newbs to give them get an idea of what keyword research is. If you feel I missed something, please feel free to post and help out :).

Think of it like this:

Broad = The amount of traffic you can expect in the long term. Broad also means people type in the keywords in various broad formats like..... "the donkey kong that wears green underwear"

Phrase = The amount of traffic you can expect in the middle term. Phrase also means people type in the keyword in the exact order but might have other keywords as well.... i.e "where can I buy donkey kong in thong"

Exact = The amount of traffic you can expect in the start. Exact also means people type the keyword as you see it .i.e "donkey kong in thong"

This is a good sign... It just means you only have 3-10 people that have done good SEO and put your keyword in both the url and in the title of the page.

Thank you very much! I'm a noob here, and I'm searching for more important posts that will really help me but this is the best post I ever read....

This is indeed a great KW tutorial for newbs. Awesome effort mate.

Though I research for keywords and have very nice experience in Keyword research.
There is something I want to know to improve myself.
Finally I have got the information with some direction here.
Thanks for sharing such an awesome post.

As a newbie, I find this method to be easier than Market Samurai. :-D

Hello,

First off, Thanks for this great thread.

I have a question/comment, though. When we do a research, we're using quotes to make several keywords look like one. All our research is done like that, as it seems from the tutorial.
However, it sounds logical to me that people, visitors, won't be using quotes when searching, but will actually use it without quotes, getting totally different results. Am I getting something wrong?

We put in the "quotes" to get a more accurate number of how many website have optimized for a particular keyword.

I.e you might see 2 million results when you search normally, then when you put in the keyword in quotes you will get like 100K results, then when you put in
intitle:"keyword"
or
"inurl:"keyword"
we get like 20K results, and when we final put in both
intitile:"keyword" inurl:"keyword"
we see how many website have optimized their website for that keyword in by having the keyword both in the title and in the url.

Hope that makes some sense.:worm3:

Thank you for your reply. I agree with your comment, but I'm afraid that users will type the keywords without quotes, thus having 2M pages as a result. Where will my page rank there?

The thing is that I found similar tutorials elsewhere, so it's gotta make sense. I guess I'm simply suspicious by nature ;)

You don't think you quite get what I was saying.

when we put the keyword in "quotes" and allintitle... and intitle and inurl....

its not to look at the specific website results that show up.... its for THE NUMBERS ONLY . We are just try to figure out if there is many people that have optimized there website or few.

Your real competition that you want to know about links, rank, age, DMOZ, Yahoo directory etc. for, is the first 10 or first 20 results that show up when you type the keyword WITHOUT quotes.

All the best.
