I am crazy to go with deep tiers. Some high competiton keywords I go for 6 to 7 tiers. I would have very less number of links in tier 1 even though my website is ranking top 3.
Use auto/manual spun content for tier2.

Good solid advice! I've never submitted to document sharing sites. If I'm going to share a PDF on multiple sites do they all need to be original? Do I need to convert multiple individual articles to PDF and upload each one to only one place? I'm assuming it would be better to have a bunch of unique PDFs, but it seems reasonable that the same document would be shared on multiple sites naturally.
Basically, I'm tired of writing original content and manually spinning and want to just write one original PDF and share it on multiple sites. What does everyone think?

It is like if you are tired you can hire some writer and who would spun it manually.
Dont give any chance for penalty. Doing things in right way will help to increase long term business.

While I had already a general idea of the tiered linkbuilding I still have a question: I followed a guide the other day and I ended up by making my first 6 manually written articles and posted them on 6 web 2.0s, the fact is, I used always the same keyword (which is the one I want to rank for) that means that I have already 12 links with the same anchor text. Did I screwed up real bad?

There is no mean to screw you up for 12 links. Just start diversifying now. But for sure if you completed the first level you can see your SERP improvement.
