Firstly thanks to Sephrata and Loyal0 for their excellent info in this thread.
In the quote above regarding getting to grips with geos, traffic, etc you mentioned that direct linking is the best way to start. I'm signed up with Mobidea and PopAds, and was wondering which verticals are best for direct links ?
Am I right in assuming that if you are direct linking you can just use a banner from Mobidea ? Or am I completely misunderstanding the terminology here ? PopAds only offers "pop" type adds, which leads to think that a lander is required for all their traffic.

Pops are low quality traffic. You can buy 1 million pops for $100. You have to be ruthless testing 3-5 campaigns a day and learn what works/doesn't work.
Speak to their support on Skype to see what offers they think might work well with direct linking.
Generally speaking, I would say gaming, certain mobile content and adult content can work with direct linking. There are also smart links you can use to try a geo/traffic source to see if things will convert.
Always check the offer to see the landing page. Ask yourself, does it look compelling? Would you buy that content? If the answer is no, then either don't run the offer or think about a landing page.
Sweepstakes/dating/antivirus need a landing page.

And what are your thoughts on the built-in tracker on Mobidea ?

I've not used the Mobidea tracker so I cannot comment on it, but a free tracker should be utilised.
If you go to the offer > screenshot, that should be the offer landing page. You should always double check though as sometimes it's not or sometimes it's been changed.

From my (albeit limited) understanding of what I've read in this thread, and on that excellent video from Sebastian, it would be very rare to have an evergreen niche in this field that wouldn't require constant tweaking to ensure you're targeting is on point

That's it the profit sounds good but when you take into account the work involved and the investment needed to learn... it is like a very dangerous adventure..

Yep. You can have a successful campaign running for weeks or months. But you need to be constantly tweaking and testing. Your goal is to dominate a few unsaturated geos, know them inside out and have multiple campaigns running at once.
You have to speculate to accumulate. There is no easy ride in this business, you have to put the hours in and be prepared to take risks.

Well... It's not dangerous at all. It's just like any other business venture. You must put in a lot of energy if you want something out. Usually if something sounds better than this, it's just a fairytale.
You know what's good in being a performance marketer? Results are nearly instant, you work with cold hard data(unlike seo, which is full of thing that's impossible to prove), you don't have to churn out a lot of nonsense content. Things moves fast, it's always challenging, and you can learn a whole new skillset that you can use for other things.

@CommandobotStudios This is what my research is telling me. Yes, there's still work involved, but as you say it's not focussed on generating content. And there's no SEO witchcraft !

Honestly, it's not enough. You will go through this too quickly before you can make anything.
Once you have around 1.5-2k then you can look back at this.

But it's enough money for you to start one of the free traffic methods - have a look at BassTrackerBoats' Facebook method as you can build a nice profit with this.

Yes, exactly.
You need to test - geo, offer, vertical, lander, traffic source.
Principal should be Offer Payout x Landing Pages x 5-10 and then you run this over 2 traffic sources.
