Looking for good tips on getting extremely localized traffic

I've been reading a bit on Local Directories and such, but I am hesitant. I am looking for something that will help me dominate in some local single city based keywording, for lead generation purposes. Anyone who's done this before care to share some tips? Any feedback would be appreciated!

I would go heavy on the localized keyword terms and try and get as many local backlinks as you can. Listing in local directories helps too. I'm not sure what your site is about but if reviews are in the picture, getting a lot of those helps as well. I would also shoot for checkins if you have a local presence.

For lead generation you can also develop fan page and can promote them locally

There are some really high quality directories that exist not only for link building, but because they get traffic. In turn, the links not only pass link juice, but can point visitors to your site. Local traffic really isn't much diff. from regular traffic. You need highly relevant, powerful, links. Links that are high on PA/DA and TrustFlow are better than links with nothing but high PageRank. And if you're doing this for businesses and not just yourself, you can build reviews and citations, which will boost their Google Places listing.

Would you recommend doing this manually? Or are there safe services you'd recommend buying that would automate this?
