Four years ago, I was thinking about making some extra money so I've started to search around, on the blogs and forums. I found out about freelancing, and more exactly about graphic design.
I was convinced that learning some Photoshop and Illustrator will earn me some money. So I've started to watch tutorials and long videos about how to create and edit a logo. It took me two or three months to be able to create a basic logo, and after that I've thought it's time to make some money.
I started to search for projects on freelancing platforms. My target was low-prize projects, thinking of that there won't be so many good designers and maybe I have a chance to win. But I was totally wrong, the competition was huge and I had no chance... But I was kind of confident, and after four months and 34 missed projects, somebody selected me as a winner for their contest. It was a logo for a car tunning shop, and I was extremely happy, after all these, I won... I had the best design from almost 130 designers there, and I got my $60.
I've discovered another great platform, with higher quality projects and bigger prizes. After five or six months there, I won my first contest, earning $350. I have a total income of about $1200 on this website. But it wasn't enough, the number of lost contests was huge and I was spending more and more time working for free...getting into the final stage of the contest and...nothing.
I had another idea to expand my area. I made a Facebook Page, for products & services, uploaded a small portfolio, created a brochure for my service and start spamming Facebook Groups. After my first day on Facebook, I got 2 likes and 0 clients. I knew I had to wait...On the second day, I had a message in my inbox. It was a team of architects and they reached my page by mistake, they were searching for a logo design service page with a similar name.
I was lucky and I delivered them a logo, after two days everything was ready and I earned $450 which was great.
After that...no luck with my Facebook Page.
I was busy for some time, and almost gave up on this thing, but two months ago I've created an Instagram page for the same logo designing service, and after just three weeks, I got my first client. It's very hard, I update my portfolio on IG with 3 designs/day. I was struggling with 170-200 followers but now I have 5000 passive followers and almost the same 170 active followers...
I thought having a higher followers number will improve my performance and that real followers will come faster after that.
What do you suggest in order to get more clients? If you are a logo designer or you just have some strategies to share with me, and other people in the same position as me it would be great !
