Keyword Research the BTB Way

Good. I was concerned about hyphens.
I use same cars.com/chevrolet-impala format, not cars.com/chevroletimpal.

Also I use categories like
cars.com/new/chevrolet-impala

I have another idea but not tested yet. Invest in one domain, put all kinds of niches.
Not decided yet to use
niche.domain.com
or
domain.com/niche
I see every day web 2.0 free websites ranking on first page and I'm wondering... why not invest in my own web 2.0 like domain?
I'll try this year, any thoughts related will be appreciated.

I'd set that up exactly like ehow and wikipedia does it:

I can also confirm that the ranking of inner pages BTB recommends is better for the ranking of the pages than a small root url EMD site, especially for retaining the ranking of the url. The interaction of the related ranking urls provide support that the 'lonely island' EMD url does not get from its inner pages (which are usually all pushing the same exact kw).

I'm also seeing inner page urls ranking 1,2,3 for a long tail kw very often when doing keyword research, which makes no sense if what "the gurus said" about ranking for EMDs and concentrating on root url kws was true. It at least shows that either approach will help with ranking, with a tilt given towards building up the bigger authority sites if you want rankings that last.

One possible way to have the best of both worlds is to build a master authority site with 4-5 articles per long-tail keyword, re-write each article and put the re-writes on a separate EMD MNS. Later you can check to see which url is creating higher ranking and earnings, or better. Hopefully both will make money, so you can eventually flip the MNS, while keeping the money coming from the same content via your authority 'keeper' site.

I have one question. When you have these hundreds of articles do you need to backlink to all the individual pages? Or only do backlinks to the site home page?

Up for this as well. I own one of your sites and I'm currently trying to backlink the lowest 5. The site is fairly new about 2 weeks+, I write an article for each kw everyday and I've ordered 10 articles for slightly tougher ones. I also added the YARPP plugin which helps to interlink between the articles as well.

What's your take on this BTB?
 
Interesting spin on finding Keywords. I will have to build a few mini-sites using this one.

I almost never backlink the root page of my sites and I'll explain.

Since I want each page to rank for only one targeted KW, I backlink that page using a variety of KW variations and even naked backlinks (http://site.com) and the generic "click here" kinds of links.

That looks natural to the search engines and works nicely when you combine the backlinks with unique content.
 
I am sorry if this question was already asked. I may have missed it in the thread.

In your process, you say you do this:

"Delete any KWs that are .80 or higher." (referring to competition)

Why? Isn't that metric the AdWords bidding competition?

That is and think about why that is so high.. because the KW is harder to rank for.

Give me the low hanging fruit all day long.

Yet another thing learned from you! While backlinking to the homepage as well as inner pages has worked for me nice, I'll try your 'tactic' too.

About the naked links, believe me guys it works. I've ranked a site on page 1 of G in a fairly competitive niche with just \regular hyperlinks' (on in the words of BTB, naked links) from high authority domains. You got to have brilliant on page SEO (hint: synonyms). Also, backlinking your pages containing your naked links would never hurt. Just try it out!

The naked links can vary as well. "http://www.domain.com". Or "domain.com".

Also, you can work with generic anchors such as "click her". "here". "website".

But I'm stuck with website/category/emd.html
I can't rank them... should I forget about category?

i did see your blog. but i also happened to discover this on my own when researching competition. its important to notice what websites who don't do SEO have in terms of backlink structure to get an idea of what would be considered "natural". often times its weirder than you think.

i once saw a website where half of the backlinks were anchored with the company owner's last name. thats not totally absurd in natural backlinking.

yes dump the category. if its a wordpress site there are plugins for it. UNLESS of course the category is part of your keyword, in which case its fine.

either way, if youre not ranking at all this may not be enough to help, you should check your internal link structure.
