Sorry for so many questions, but I would really appreciate your help. I am trying to build my first authority site. I have read the entire thread, and some of the questions I had got answered (in which case I removed them from this post as I drafted it), but I still have outstanding questions.

Could you explain the details a little more?

You get 800 kws from Google, and then filter them down to several hundred, so your outsourcers have less work. What do you send them? Every keyword and then let them figure out the topics?

Or do you categorize them yourself and then send them off? What specifically (how many KWs) do you send your outsourcers?

I send them the KWs and have them write articles for each KW.

I'll not answer that as that is spoon feeding... monetize your sites the best way you can after testing several methods.

1. what do the competition numbers mean? e.g. .80

i'm looking at my keywords right now in excel, and there's none over .80 and they all get over 1000 local exact searches. some get 5000! is that a good thing? but what does it mean exactly?

2. is it okay to use competitor's keywords as my keyword? for example... (not a good one, but i'm trying to make sense)... just say my site is about mechanics in sydney. am i allowed to use people's business names as keywords for my site and outrank them if i can? like can i use "john's auto repair" as a keyword if it's getting say 3000 searches a month? can i try and steal his traffic?

The higher the number the more competition.

I wouldn't do that myself and never have so I can't give you decent feedback but that sounds like an interesting idea.

This is really brilliant. I don't often come across many new good ideas after being in marketing for years but this is a great little piece of advice. Not only do you get keyword ideas to populate your new authority site but those keywords are going to be viewed as both relevant in google's eyes and your visitors eyes creating a great user experience for them so they stay on the site and come back.

Why do I do this with Wikipedia? Well, if Google recognizes wikipedia as an authority site, and G does for almost any subject, then I want Google to see that my process is very similar in using many of the same or similar KWs on my sites. Wikipedia KWs on your niche site can have a nice effect in the ever prying eyes of Google.

So now I have some 50 ? 60 KWs or so sitting in my notepad looking all fat and happy and it is time to log into my Adwords account. You don?t have to buy adwords campaigns to open an adwords account; it?s free and if you choose to run campaigns you can but you are not obligated.

I always have the latest posts on my home page... that may not be best for a smaller site if you are only targeting under 100 KWs or so though.

I now use WP pages. At one time I used html pages but that was because I am an idiot and didn't know any better.

With WP I can add in a page and have it indexed in minutes when I add content. All the content is interlinked so much easier and with this ping list http://www.mediafire.com/?beopaip2rqq2e26 my pages get crawled early and often.

Nice tut BTB. Pretty much mirrors mine.

One thing I've been questioning lately is the wisdom of deleting any keywords over the .8 competition score.

For a while, I was doing this too, but then I realized, this is an adwords tool - the comp score is valuing how hard it would be not to rank organically, but how many competitors I would have in paid results.

So I found the best way to judge competition is the even more labor-intensive (until I can automate it or someone smarter than me points out an existing tool) method of seeing how many results there are in the serps. If you want to rank for this keyword, you'll need to beat out all the other sites that rank for that keyword. Then I filter it like so:

Under a million: bingo. 1, 2, 3 million: still totally worth it. 4, 5, 6 million: better be something I'm interested in. 7, 8, 9 million: Only if I have a better site than everyone on page one. 10, 11, 12 +: getting a bit above my pay grade.

The hole in this technique is subjectivity: I may think my site is better than everyone on page one, and I may have the a similar backlink profile, but it's not a guarantee. Conversely, I've been able to rank on page 1 for keywords with xx million results just by having more and better content but fewer links, age, etc. So it has its flaws for sure, but it's the best I know. If anyone has a more accurate and/or less labor-intensive way I'd gladly take it up.
