Keyword Research the BTB Way

Hi BTB

Thanks for clarifying .Rep given for awesome info shared by you :-)

Can you elaborate on how you create your categories for such big websites.

Let me use "cancer" as an example. This is such a wide topic and you can write 1000s of pages of info. But it all comes down to 4 major categories.

1)types of cancer
2)symptoms of cancer
3)cancer treatment types (chemotherapy and so on)
4)cancer diagnosis. may be
5)latest advances in the field of cancer treatment and diagnosis.

I would like to know how many categories you create and how you classify them. Also do you use google wonderwheel to create categories?

Thanks in advance :D

Google Wonderwheel is gone.

just about keywords, i used to do adwords for 5 years, too many restrictions/ban/blahblah.
Anyway like the op i rarely used tools, i mean i used them marketsam/google keyword tool and hundreds of others, but
1.my brain
2.friends

are the best options imo, use the tools to check on "competition". I just think of keywords and run with it, but the most important is your friends.
Let me explain, if you're doing IM, then you have already distanced yourself from a "normal" websurfer you cannot literally "think" like them anymore, it's impossible cuz now you "know" the IM world.

Your friends do not however, go just have them come over, sit them down and say, "Hey i need you to search blah blah" and just look over their shoulder while they do it, and see where the mouse moves (usually ppl move the mouse unconsciously to where they want to go, w/o even knowing).

work it into conversations "haha, that's a funny story, how would you Google it?"

figure out how "normal" ppl google, whenever i hear my fiance typing I always run over to see if she's doing a search (she has a mechanical keyboard, i can hear) i want to basically catch her in the act of "typing normal".

don't have friends? here's an idea take a trip to the library (they all have computers now for free with library card) and just walk behind a person and say "hey can you google blah blah for me real quick?" Do it at a starbucks or whatever works too.

I'm not trying to be "leary" or whatever but i'm trying to make you understand that going at it from a keyword perspective as a person doing IM is already a loosing battle, because (if you do this research) "normal people" do not search in the way you want them to search or the way the "guru's" want to make you believe.

basically i'm saying if you're doing IM you've desensitized yourself to what a normal person experiences on the web, use the experiences of normal ppl to remember what the search experience is like, replicate it in your keyword research.

This is great advice! I used to test CPA offers on my girlfriend to decide which ones would convert best...

..then she started wanting to sign up for them all :speechles

Could you elaborate on why you use local searches as opposed to global?

Because I only want to target the US market when I build a site as I set the KW tool for United States and English.

4?

I have hundreds of categories... breast cancer, breast cancer symptoms, breast cancer cures, breast cancer treatment... there are probably thousands of categories I could create but hopefully this will help you see things a little differently.

I use all my KWs for categories and put each article into at least 2 categories.

nice share BTB,

besides Adword KW, i also use scrape Google suggest. with a little from a software i can generate tons of keyword easily.
and i love Ramsweb's works too.. is he still busy ?

Hi Basstracker;

When you sort your keywords in the spreadsheet you say to filter out the ones with competition higher than .8 The way I look at it is the higher the competition the more adsense pays per click. Is this true and if so wouldn't you want to keep the higher competition words so that you can make more with adsense?

I've talked with others about that as well... I believe that those KWs pay higher but they are also hard to rank so I don't bother.

My thought is to get as many of the low hanging fruit KWs ranked so that I get a lot of traffic on a lot of different pages.

Also, I don't always use adsense to monetize my sites so that doesn't come into play all the time.

Great share BTB.

I liked your idea about creating a page about all the KWs and linking each page of the site to that.

With that, google bots will crawl more of your site.

What about the domain? We are talking about EMD, but then if you do a "broad website", what do you target?

Even with an EMD you can follow this process... Get a site that is PickAnIndustryproblems.com and you can create your main article talking about Your Chosen Industry problems in general and then all your subsequent articles will talk about specific Your Chosen Industry problems.

Set the site so your main article is always on top and you have your EMD in place and the following articles will complement the original article.

The real estate site I reference in this thread is set up exactly like that... close to 2,000 pages, chock full of quality content, ranking for hundreds of KWs.

I forgot we were not talking about micro-niche sites here. Thanks!

You can certainly start with a MN site and then add to it as time goes on.

That is how I came upon building big sites.

Those of you that have seen my websites know that my smallest one is 150 pages and I have several with about 2,000 pages. My most recent one has about 1,100 pages according to Google but in reality it is only about 300 articles or so.

Newbie question here, but by this are you saying it is better for SEO and hits to have each article as a page? My site is a wordpress site and I am adding more and more articles but normally only have a pages which are almost groups for multiple articles. Is this not what I should be doing? Thanks in advance :)
