Keyword Research the BTB Way

Hi BTB thanks for the info. I do have one question though regarding content.

They are quality sites with quality unique content and they rank for hundreds of KWs and are often the source for eHow writers and other legit authority sites thus giving me backlinks from those authority sites and Google seems to like that sort of thing.

I am planning to start an authority site in health(medical condition) niche. Can you tell me any sources where i can find lots of info to write on "medical condition" info type site.

Becoz i usually read wikipedia articles to gather info or visit sites like ehow.

But this method wont help me get backlinks from ehow or similar sites.

Epic BTB ;) Thanks for this.
Have you ever tried CPA on your sites in any way, or do these "informational sites" generally work better with those 4 you've stated above that you monetized with?

Thanks m8.. While your system might seem a little tedious for the people used to working on TT4 or market samurai, I believe in adwords quite strongly as an effective tool for KW research.

What many of us do not realize is the broad/phrase/exact distinction. Taking the example of "widgets blue" as you mentioned, it might have 10k BROAD searches, but the exact could be as low as few hundred, while blue widgets might just show 5k searches, and have a higher exact search count.

Your process is simple; find keywords that human's search for and not bots. A bot might do different permutations with words, but human's have a tendency to type phrases to get the right result i.e long tail keywords, which sound sensible.

I am not much into adsense, but I could add one suggestion to those using your technique for adsense. I then dump those high volume keywords in godaddy's bulk domain name checker to find out any EMD's available to match those keywords. And surprisingly, you will find a few EMD's with high exact searches too.

Just proves most internet marketers don't focus as much on KW research, which IMHO is the first step in building a SEO campaign.

PS: Sincerely appreciate the value you give to quality content BTB! cheers!

I personally can't help you there because I don't do any research for writing anymore; I outsource everything but if you saw what Ramsweb and my other writer are producing for this latest site you would be more than impressed and it is in a very high competition medical niche.

For some reason I suck at CPA... I generate less than 500.00 a month from it so there is either something I am doing wrong or my niches are not tailored to CPA offers.

Nice tips, kw research is EVERYTHING. I bet this is gonna seem like WORK to some people, well, hell, it is, and should be. This part at the VERY least.

Excellent idea with the bulk domain name checker.

+rep given for the share.

I knew I was doing something right, when setting up my micro niche sites I was only searching for 10-15 related keywords but now its time for me to scale it up, now that I know I am heading in the right direction its full speed ahead

It is absolutely work but once you lay the KW foundation you'll end up with a very strongly built site.

one thing i do is i type the keyword phrases into google and try to target the one that comes up first in google instant because i think a lot of people are lazy now and just click on it rather than continue to type.

I like that and I'm going to add that in... you are 100% right that the majority of people are lazy and would do that.

Great post, thanks for directing me here from our PM's.

Bass, you said you have a site with 1,000 articles or more. Are these targetting a broad range of different keywords, for example, dog food, to, pet crabs.

Or are all the articles related to a base keyword like, hundreds of articles related to cancer for example?

I saw KW research, I saw BassTrackerBoats, I knew it was going to be good. Thanks for another good share, I don't think anybody can learn too much about KW research.

I said the same thing haha. I like the wikipedia snippet, I will try that. I usually don't go for such high competition keywords to start my website though. I like to go with the super super easy no-backlinks-required keywords at the beginning so I can provide more internal link juice to my future articles. I was surprised to see how little you do in terms of competitive research. You have a nice source of articles so competition isn't as important to you I suppose. For just the average part-time IMer I'd recommend doing more competitive research with Market Samurai (In the Download section here). Look for keywords with low backlinks to page and then write an amazing 800-1200 word article about that keyword. You will need minimum backlinks to rank that keyword and you've just added a nice long authoritative article to your website.

Excellent again basstrackerboats about keyword research. But one thing that people might need to know, what theme do you suggest for these type of sites?
do you use just a basic wordpress template, an adsense template, or something completly different. From what im reading a lot depends on your theme I think.

I vary my themes depending on the kind of site that I am building... for my cancer site I am using the "Life is Simple" theme, for other sites I use the 20 10 theme and customize it... I know a few guys that use the CTR theme.. I have taken the heat map theme and customized that as well.

Could you elaborate on why you use local searches as opposed to global?

Thanks BTB for all of your contributions, and this one is key for me. I got wind of your business model a while back, and have since been following in your footsteps. I have left the mini-site's behind, and have begun creating massive authority sites. The rewards are so much greater, and what I really love is the peace of mind. I'm not worrying about whether a manual review would knock me out of the serps forever. Only thing that kills me right now, is I write all my content myself. Some days turning out 50 posts. I know it's all worth it in the end though.

Honestly, I never really even thought about my keywords looking spammy, and as we speak I'm looking over some of my choices, and will make some changes.

Thanks again.

I got into this recently(a month ago), and have been doin the keyword research this way(but no wiki involved yet),
but I actually get the microniche sites made from the bst threads here then when they suggest a keyword/domain then i check and see if there is enough scope to get more content for it and what the related keywords are the searches exact -US, Canada & global.
Once i am convinced I order the site, then pay the content writers for some articles put it up there outsource, some SEO work which is actually a mix of a lot of things and then track the progress and wait.
adding content and SEO will be a continued process until yu see steady results I havnt been makin a ton and im doin this mostly for the experience and learnin from it- mistakes etc.,

My latest site is actually based on hundreds of KWs about cancer and I generally try to keep things about a very broad subject.

The previous 2 were about real estate, specifically renting and the other one was about bonds.

The broader the subject the bigger the site the more opportunity to generate traffic from zilions of KWs.
