Keyword Research - Advice/Feedback?

How do I KW research the right way? I've been checking out a few threads on BHW, and this is how I understand it. (There are many methods - But this is the one I'll be using)

1. I think of 30 keywords that I think might be good for my website
2. I check them in the Google Keyword Planner tool and they have to be within 2-8K monthly searches.
3. Then I check Google Keyword Planner for related keywords to those I brainstormed and I pick out 5-8 keywords that looks good to me -
Going for long tail keywords
4. I research those picked out keywords on Google Search to find out if I can outrank potential competitors, if they don't have the KW I searched for in the title, i'll go for it.

Then I just sprinkle these keywords in my articles and reviews right?

What do you think of this? Am I on the wrong track?

Put them also into KWFinder or Keysearch, you get a limited number of free searches per day, to check competition.

Yeah pretty much all the same sort of tool, look for low KCs, then manually look at top 10 sites.

To be honest they're fine but I haven't used either for 2 or 3 years at least.

I use Keysearch with Ahrefs and Semrush mainly.
Moz and LTP as a back up too.

@MisterF - Is it impossible to deal with 40+ KW's?

No such word as impossible, but why not work smarter rather than harder.
You sound like you're new to this, so try and go for an easier keyword first, get it ranked, keep records of how you did it then go for the harder ones.

If you were learning to run you'd do a 5 miler first, not try to do a half marathon for your first run.
