Depends on what you’re after. For monetization, alternatives like Media.net, Ezoic, or direct ad deals can work. For scaling bigger, ADX and other ad exchanges are solid options.
 
WP is not the best if you're just starting up and need something low maintenance, if you want to work more on your site than updating all wordpress stuff, tweaking the themes to make it just right then you should probably checkout 'ghost' - it's new and focused mostly on bloggers.
 
A simple/fast loading, clean looking, mobile and SEO friendly WP theme is the best choice for blogging, from the POV of a "just set it up and forget it, don't touch the coding, just focus on content" approach. IF you need to, you can scale it up and add plugins as needed. This is helpful for people who have other things to do in their online business that work on web design. Pick the right business theme at the start, and then just concentrate on what matters.

I would not say it is the greatest for every use case anymore. WordPress is powerful but some times bloated. For lean fast loading blogs ,i have enjoyed using static site generators like Hugo or Jekyll.
 
WordPress is still the most popular choice, but there are good alternatives depending on what you want. Ghost is great for simple and fast blogs, Webflow gives you more design freedom, and Jekyll/Hugo are good if you like static sites and speed. It really depends on your goals and how technical you want to get.

Well, WordPress is still the most popular and flexible

Alternatives like Ghost, Medium, or Wix are easier but less powerful for SEO and growth, Imo
