Is phpbb a good software to build my forum? It's Free

I have used phpbb in the past and it is a good forum software.
But if you want something simpler to manage I suggest you to use Simple Machines
It's free as well.

Cool! I was planning to create a forum site as well. Never heard of Simple Machines before but I definitely will give it a try as well.

Hey guys,

Can we use nulled version of Vbulletin and create a website? If so would there be any problems later.

I have fiddled with most of them....
My Vote Goes To: MYBB

I use MyBB. I have an issue with spam accts though... I have to manually accept all accts to make sure I dont get a ton of spam posted on my board, and usually have at least 20 new spam accts a day to weed out. What are your suggestions for stopping these spam accts?

Don't get rid of the SPAM!!!! I'm not Vegetarian!!! :pirate:

phpbb is easy to use, it is free, and there is many plugins for it. What else do you want? Everything is there.

Bit late to the party, but I've been a fan of MyBB for years. It's free and easy to setup. I think it looks a lot nicer than phpbb and is a solid platform.

There's no real need to invest in VB unless you're planning on building something big.

I've got 2 cents on this one... I started a forum about a synth that I bought using phpbb. It built a following quickly and all was going well but it took me forever to figure out how to do what I thought should be simple tasks. I ended up getting inundated with spam (the theme was leaving a hole in registration). I ended up writing some long custom mysql queries that cleaned out 20000 spam users and 60000 posts (I'm a php developer). I was down for a week and lost most my subscribers.

My advice is if you use phpbb use the theme that comes with it. And I hope you have better luck setting it up than I did lol. If u get spammed hit me up for the cleanup queries I wrote.

Just buy the software, it's worth the price. Is clearly the best forum software out there.

And yes, if vB find out you're running a nulled copy, don't be surprised if your host shuts you down.

Using phpbb has some huge drawbacks and one of them is security concern. If you can manage and take care of that then you are good to go.

If you really need a free one then I would suggest SMF

Code:
http://www.simplemachines.org/
If you have some funds available then I would suggest to go with IP Board

Code:
http://www.invisionpower.com/products/board/

EDIT : Also the very first thing you should do after setting up the forum is installing spam protection plugin :)

for a free forum software it is very good but if you are alooking for a paid option you must go with vbulletin

What software does blackhatworld use? It seems to have the features i'm looking for

If it's going to be your main money making site, I'd suggest vbulletin

Both phpBB and vBulletin are powerful bulletin board software. Each software comes with its own advantages and disadvantages over others. At the end of the day, its all down to users personal preference.:)

What aproach/mods you recommend against xrumer spam? Even with captcha on registration i get tons.

phpbb is simply the best forum platform that comes free. It has tons of mods to tweak the site. However the learning curve is slightly steep, you need to have a bit of php editing skills to apply many mods (if you are good with it, then phpbb is simply the best). Else you can go for SMF. SMF is simple and easy to use however it will not have that much features as phpbb.

However both these platforms will bring in a lot of spam (mostly from xrummer), there are a couple mods to control spam, use them.

All the best

I couldn't recommend MyBB more. They are both very similar, but MyBB has more features. I love the amount of customization you get with myBB, and the plug-ins go and on. Do yourself a favor and get myBB! ;)

Going to bump this up because I'm very interested as well. I need to start with a free forum before buying a paid forum software.

Has anyone made a forum with vanilla? It looks like a great platform.
