Hey there! This is my first post, although I have been visiting BHW for a while now.

I am currently working on building a website in Swedish. I found the perfect EMD, but it contains the Swedish letter 'ö'. I was wondering whether I should go for this domain, or if it will affect my SEO in any way.

When I type an IDN, for example 'exampleö' in a URL in the browser (I am new so I can't type the whole URL out), it displays something like 'xn--example-zzb'. When linkbuilding, should I build links to the first address or the second one? Does it even matter?

I can't really find much information on IDNs and SEO even though I've done a few Google searches.

Type keywords with ö on google swedish, and look for any sites using this letter,if they are using and ranking it means that it is acceptable.

I have a client who is from some European country and he would always have IDNs as his domain names. I was providing him link building services including social bookmarkings. Most SB sites doesn't accept IDNs so I would use the xn--example-zzb version and once the bookmark was posted it would show up as IDN just fine and they even used to get better SERPs afterwards because of backlinks. So I guess its perfectly alright if you decide to get an IDN especially if you're targeting local market where English is not the first language.
