Remember before Facebook, Myspace was king.

Back then, if you had said that Facebook was going to be a Myspace killer before it even launched, they would have laughed too. But look now, Myspace is down the tubes and Facebook is king, for now.
 
To all the people saying go for it, I often find myself signing up to empty social networks when all my friends are on another major network. Just like I like to list my products on an empty auction website with no traffic. Get real, positivity is one thing and dreaming is another. The biggest joke is all these people preaching positivity (dreaming) will not even sign up and use this network. And why? What is the point in persuading someone that they are doing the right thing when they clearly are not. As for Myspace / Facebook, social networking was not as huge then and also you will find Facebook had millions pumped into it to get it ahead.

Twitter-type of short messaging service, that would allow people to create "rooms" where only specific people would see their messages and chat with them. Same would go for shared content, that could be shared publicly, behind password or to just those said "rooms".

He's right about Facebook being too complicated, Twitter being too simple - something directly inbetween could make it big.

So how would the picture and/or video sharing be integrated in a way that it's competes with the top social networks?

Good luck with that, man. Though I'm sure you're not the first and certainly not the last one to try that. I think that your timing would have to be better.
 
I think the best time to introduce your platform is when fb makes one of their UI changes that everyone decides to hate. Although I haven't seen any big changes in a while.
