Yeah I -liked- to browse Instagram whilst at the gym in-between sets, which is something I can no longer do as it brings me back to the first, freaking post over and over.

To answer your first post we are not talking about the first time you open the app. And we are also not talking about IG stories.
What I'm talking about is if you leave the app for 5 seconds it reloads the stream of posts from the users you follow.
Its like trying to read a book. You take your eyes off the page for 5 seconds and Mark Zuckerberg knocks the book out of your hands and tells you to start on page one again!!!!!!
As for bugs intentional or third party. Social media is full of people complaining about this new feature. All devices, this didn't happen before. One user in this thread says his monster of an iphone 7 Plus is having this issue so it's not processor/ram issue. I appreciate what you're saying but it's completely intentional.
IMO its so the sheep see more adverts...

This annoying new feature has stopped happening for me and social media noise about it seems to have stopped too.
Has the constant refresh feed stopped happening for you guys?? @acidnation, @bagrov, @datsunguy, @that_ryan_guy, @MatteoMatt, @NovaflareFX,
FYI I haven't updated anything on my phone so as we thought it was at Instagram's end...

I have this problem too where if you leave the app the app stay close and if you open it has to reload and what I did since I am jailbroken on my iphone 6 plus I use a tweak called dissident and set instagram app on foreground and now it act the way before and account works the same way as if I leave the app how it by default but now the app act how I want it to act, if I leave it open, it stay open.

Thanks for the heads up. Seems like its slowing rolling out so enjoy it while you can.
If you search twitter for "instagram refresh" there are loads of people complaining about this feature.
I really hope its a bug but my gut is saying its a planned move to boost eyes on adverts.
Either way its poor play by instagram and its gonna hit us in the long run...

Just updated to the newest (Jan 17th) app version for IG and guess what, this auto feed refresh (when you leave the app for 2 seconds) is still happening.
Why aren't there more users on here worried about this new feature? It's gonna kill engagement if not instagram...
