Is it still important for SEO? I don't know if it is anymore unless your website is quite large and/or difficult to navigate. I think that if your website's layout and navigation menu are written with clean HTML then that will suffice.
It can be useful for web accessibility in any efforts to comply with WCAG 2.0 guidelines. But I doubt anyone here cares about that.
However a sitemap.xml file is definitely important and it should be submitted to Google Search Console for indexing.

If your websites has too many pages you can add html sitemap for users to help them navigate your website.
