If you want to make dynamic webpages. then learn PHP.
    Its something different than HTML.
Start with tutorials what you can find on the web.
Then try to make your own project, so you can learn it on the fly.
You can learn PHP in 1 or 2 months. But you'll gain experience in PHP when coding for years.

php is a server side programming language, html is a markup language which is used to style documents (websites).
So the clients (user, visitor) browser interprets a html page and displays it according to the rules (the html and css code) on your page.

With php you can do much more than just display websites, you can create database driven systems, websites, scrapers, mobile applications even with the right framework...
With html you can design websites

So in short, they are both totally different things that you can not compare, like you can not compare a fruit with a vegetable.

But you should know both, plus also javascript and jquery. Then you're a full blown web developer.

Yeah, you will need php if you want to make pages dynamic. Html will just give you a static page. If you have a web server online, you can start learning and testing your code. Otherwise, you may get xampp and install php on your localhost.

One easy to follow tutorial site is w3schools

You'll have to learn HTML anyway. That's the most basic of web development. You must need PHP or any other server side scripting for that matter for dynamic web pages (web pages that deal with database and passing data from one page to another for example). Even if you are a good PHP programmer and you don't know HTML, you'll face some problems.

So, start with html. Learning HTML should not take too long. Then move to PHP.

You have to know php to tweak WP templates :)
WP has been coded in php, and to work with it (tweaking templates and developing custom features etc.) you'll have to additionally understand the wordpress API (which is quite easy to learn once you know php well enough.)

As other said, you can't compare html/css and php, they are two completely different things, you can't do much with one without the other.
And as madsem rightfully added, add javascript/jQuery to the mix and you'll have all the necessary skills of a webdeveloper. :)

You better learn SEO/Marketing that's is a lot more powerful and useful than php which is good but is not needed for your own sites, for small'medium sites is more important the look and feel and the SEO. Extra php functionality is cheap can be easily bought or installed for free with WordPress.

They are two different thing. HTML is client side markup language, in simple words it lays the foundation of your website.

PHP is a server side language which can be used to communicate with your database.

To be honest, you gotta learn both of them.

There is no comparison, because they are two different things. Just like there 's no meaning in comparing a horse and a bathtub.:p

HTML is a markup language (that 's what the M means) - this means it is structure, like a drawing, only with words instead of lines.

PHP is a full blown computer language, with logic, functions and variables.
