besides backlinks are there other ways to maintain a blog that is already on page 1?

it would hurt for you to share your high level niche with us: for example, news, YMYL, technology...
i would keep analyzing the top 3 positions for your primary keyword and see what is it about their on-site that has put them there. in particular see the breakdown of your primary keyword across different H tags and P tags. see what kind of questions they are answering on their money page.
also treat your powerful tier 1 links, as your money site. build powerful manual links to them.
one more thing: DO NOT create competing pages as your money page. google will have a hard time figuring out which one to rank for your primary keyword.

Focus on updating the articles, title tag, meta descriptions, do proper internal links, increase you social media presence, boost up your site speed, keep your site responsive for mobiles, prepare your site for voice search, diversify the anchor texts, add more long tail keywords, & maintain your link velocity for more link juice.

You shouldn't really do a lot of changes on a page that is already ranking #1. Most of the sites that have content that is ranking #1 do changes very rarely, like updating the title with the most recent data (2020 to 2021).
Also having your article ranking #1 will have a snowball effect in terms of backlink, as many new articles that will be posted are going to link out to your new site.
I would never do A/B testing with a page that is already ranking #1.
