You need some basic c++ skills its really not that hard and you can even get bitcoin or litecoin code onljne since they are both opensource. The hard part is getting the miners.

Check cryptonotestarter to create a coin like Monero, it isn't so difficult but you need some "base" programming knowledge and money for servers.
CryptoNote protocol is opensource, you can found it on GitHub.

Also considering the creation of a coin project. Lots of venture cap looking for top notch ICO projects right now.

Definitely a challenge vs a traditional startup. Short term exit strategies don't seem in play right now, so it would be a long term project for sure.

Good luck to you OP. You might considering ordering some books on blockchain. Even if you're not a dev, it will help you build a greater understanding of the moving parts.

It's not hard to create your own cryptocurrency, in fact you can just rip code from Github and easily fork Bitcoin, Litecoin etc and create ERC20 smart contract tokens on the Ethereum Blockchain.

The real question you should be asking yourself, is how do you plan to add value to your currency, how will it stand out from the other 1500? What will your cryptocurrency do that others can't do? With an over-saturated market you're going to need a strong USP to have any value.

Once you are done planning all this, you are set to create your cryptocurrency.

The whole process goes somewhat like this:
  • Nurture your cryptocurrency using communities.
  • Get coders, miners and developers on board.
  • Understand your merchants.
  • Once created, launch it.
I think you should hire some experienced cryptocurrency coders and developers. You will end up saving a lot of valuable time in this process because of their wealth of experience.
