How Should Software Developers Do Research?

As a software developer, I have difficulty keeping up with the agenda and new tools. Is there an easy way to do this?

Do you mean you don't have time to learn all of the new "shiny" programming languages? I can understand why it is frustrating.
I would suggest to focus on one programming language that is popular and is likely to remain popular for the foreseeable future (for example, Java). Focus on one specific domain instead of chasing the new shiny object.
