How essential is site speed to Google rankings?

There's a reason google marks this red. Often it's easy to fix most of the problems that occurr with some simple changes in the settings or plugins, especially if you're using wordpress.

Somewhere in RB there is probably web speed.

Plus the indirect effects from speed alone makes it critical.
Such as from user experience. Example:
User goes to site, pages take too long to load, so exits out of tab instead of waiting. Now you have a higher bounce rate.

Just google Bounce Rate and you will quick find this:

It's not a huge factor, but often an easy one to improve, so should be done. Are you using wordpress? If so there are many plugins that will bring it right up.
 
It's a minor ranking factor but has other implications too. For example, a slow site will mean a higher bounce rate and less time on site, which will also impact rankings.
 
fix it if you can ... speed is a ranking factor so why nit trying to optimise.

  • For every 100 ms of improvement, they grew incremental revenue by up to 1%’ (source)
Thus, a small decrease can result in significant loss of conversion rate as people will be more likely to abandon their shipping or exit your website.
