There's a reason google marks this red. Often it's easy to fix most of the problems that occurr with some simple changes in the settings or plugins, especially if you're using wordpress.
It's a rather weak signal, maybe 10% of the whole ranking sauce. All other things equal, a faster site ranks higher.

It's not a huge factor, but often an easy one to improve, so should be done. Are you using wordpress? If so there are many plugins that will bring it right up.
