Here's my experience so far:
1. I tried hiring VAs from BHW marketplace. Not going to call anyone by names, but most VAs used AI to generate content even when there wasn't ChatGPT. There were various websites in AI like CopyAi and something else in 2021 and 2022 and the provider used 100s of free accounts to get the maximum juice for free without spending any money. I then asked them to setup Monitask - a screenshot software to monitor work. They went ahead and setup a fake computer and put a person to pretend like working for a few hours but then I realised they were pooling their staffs. Otherwise there wouldn't be a 4 hour inactive time. So even though I paid for a person for full month and continued to renew for several months, they gave me half-assed work. I tried a couple more providers by almost all of them were similar.
2. I hired an SEO agency for the same task. Asked to pay a couple of grands, which I did. Gave the same AI shit that VAs did for couple hundred dollars along with very bad links.
And then finally I decided to get my own team to do it. Honestly that's the best decision ever.
The VA company I found on BHW was hiring interns and girls in TIER 2 city in India for 50 USD to 200 USD per month whereas they charged my around $400 or $500 (IIRC) at that time but didn't even allocate full resource.
So I went the traditional way - posted on job platform, conducted more than 3 dozen interviews, selected like 5 worthy candidates with English degree and then conducted second round of interview. I told them that I expect content that is written without AI and if you're not upto it and if you can't work I will not hesitate to fire. I asked them to write content while I was on call with screen share. It took me a ton of time to hire the 1 person I wanted. Nearly spend an 100-150 hours.
Unlike the VAs, I did not try to leverage talents and paid $400 - the same I did for this VA company. If you don't know already, that's a very good starting salary in India similar to $80k/year in USA. And then I trained this person on SEO with my course collection. Gave them some of my techniques. The biggest part was, after hiring them, it took me more than 2-3 months to get them do what I want with training, meetings, work shadowing sessions etc. But I am glad I did that because now I have working process to hire an another person and train them.
Right now however, I have eased up on writing everything yourself and gave them a tiny AI tool that I built for creating blog posts. More work is getting done and I end up tuning my AI tool once in a while and updating it. But that was a business decision I took as I was confident that my AI tool was pretty good and sounded very human.
So this is kind of a big thing and investing in good people with money as well as energy is very much needed for gaining results.
