The problem isn't the time it takes to answer.
The problem is that the people who answer
1. usually have no clue what you're talking about, if the problem is anything more than "how do I use my control panel?"
2. have NO ability to DO anything --- they have to text message the techs who CAN do stuff, and it can take forever for them to go back and forth.
Basically, when it comes to real tech support, the people who answer the phone are like receptionists. I've had a problem where apache had to be restarted or the MySQL server had to be restarted --- and it can take 30 minutes. Any other host I've used, dedicated or shared (except for a couple of POS offshore ones that I tried) - I can pick up the phone, talk to a tech, and have them restart apache immediately. Takes about 20 seconds. With Hostgator, it's a huge deal.
AAAAARGH.
(And sending an email ticket can still take forever to get a response - and the live chat people are even worse than the phone people. If it wasn't a major pain to switch hosts because I have an SEO account there with a lot of different IPs and sites, I'd be long gone.)
