Hostgator is terrible. Can anyone recommend a good web host?

bluehost(using it atm),stablehost(my friend used this and he said its good too),hostthename i see it here at hosting section with some good positive reviews =)

You can host wordpress sites for free on heroku.com. They use Amazon's EC2 infrastructure so speed is far better than you'd get using a shared host.

It's slightly more difficult to setup than shared hosting. One of these days I'll write up a tutorial.

edit: and I agree with the OP. Hostgator is terrible. I had a site shut down without warning using them. Left and never looked back.
