Holy Crap!! Yahoo Site Explorer Shutting Down Today

Remember! this thing has 2 sides... your competitor has hard time to track down your backlinking structures and replicating your scrapebox AA lists.

I'm happy that it's gone, maybe customers will stop complaining that they cant see their backlinks getting indexed in YSE

I agree on both fronts....

Although it'll be harder to generate solid backlink lists for either manual/Scrapebox/other linkbuilding methods.

Looks like that means more scraping/PR checking/etc off Google searches. Footprints are now that much more relevant.

Also agree with the customers and the YSE complaint. YSE had been going downhill the past few months which caused a bunch of headaches.

I use Google Webmaster Tools, great to get view backlinks pointing to your site, but no info about competitors. SeoQuake is less useful now.

I would NEVER use anything google to check backlinks.YSE is still running as of now and I've grabbing as many backlinks as I can.
I've not been one to put too much into looking at my own backlinks but it will be missed.

There will not be anything decent to replace YSE for some time I don't think, you'd need a helluva infrastructure to create something.

Yahoo site explorer was good while it lasted, but it has been slowly dying for a while now.

I use Majestic SEO and SEO Spyglass, and they give me more than enough backlink possibilities.:)

As someone said webmasters tools is a great way fr google to snoop on you!! You really want that? and as was mentioned how do you snoop on your competition with this.

for people who need to analyze 5-10 websites' backlinks at a time, YSE shutting down shudnt be an issue, but for people like me, who load thousands of websites at once and harvest their backlinks to find HIGH PR blog commetn pages etc, this is a very dark day. theres no other tool other than sbox where u can just load up thousands of sites and get their backlinks.. :(

Majestic SEO is awesome, however, access to it isn't as easy as YSE though the quirk search status FF toolbar...

May look to build my own alternative obv. not as deep but making it as easy...

So sad to hear that. I hope there will be a new alternative way to see competitor's bacllinks

I really hope that the rest of the backlink checkers step up there game, especially Majestic.

While without a doubt Majestic is the best solution right now, its still not where it should or could be. Hopefully the increased funding from everyone signing up allows for some more up to date data...

Majestic SEO is supposedly working on a major overhaul for the upcoming 2012 year.

You can read more about it at their blog.

May be Spyglass will work. I receive email from link-assistant written below:

Code:
1) SEO SpyGlass will continue gathering up to 100,000 links like before.

Unlike other backlink tools that relied on Yahoo! Site Explorer in the first place (and may become obsolete in a couple of hours) SEO SpyGlass will continue gathering hundreds of thousands links without Yahoo! Site Explorer. SEO SpyGlass uses multiple sources to spy out links. If Site-Explorer breaks, your links will be pulled from another place.

2) Your software was massively prepared for this YSE thing over the last month.

Of course we knew about the upcoming change beforehand and made a few important updates to SEO SpyGlass (adding more new backlink sources and upgrading the old ones).

3) Link count will even grow in a few weeks!

Right now we're already running in-house tests of an own multi-billion database of links. This means that you will have a new, very backlink-rich channel for pulling links. You'll be able to use it in SEO SpyGlass in just a couple of weeks.

So, as you see, there's no need to worry - with SEO SpyGlass you won't be caught off guard.

If you're still relying on any other free backlink research tool, this might be high time you switched to SEO SpyGlass as it's already the best desktop backlink finder and is about to beat even online services for backlink search.

I have been using Yahoo Site Explorer for a while now to find my competitor backlinks.

I guess I need to find a good alternative.

Essentially you won't be able to check your backlinks, pages indexed, or other vital information using Yahoo's free Site Explorer.

That means there are only paid solutions available like Majestic SEO and SEOMoz./QUOTE]

There are a few free alternatives:

  • Bing Webmaster Tools - has almost the same data as Yahoo Site Explorer
  • SEOmoz PRO free trial
  • Majestic SEO (only free for your website, you just have to upload the verification file)
  • Blekko, a search engine that is very transparent and shows you link data and some other cool stuff
Honestly I believe they shutdown Yahoo Site Explorer to get more people to use Bing Webmaster Tools which has all the same data. And coincidentally Bing Webmaster Tools had its major "honey badger" update just 5 months ago.

so when is it shutting down? its still working.

It's adapt and survive. Sure it sucks. I've been using it daily. It's going to be harder now, but the rewards will be so much higher for the ones who will adapt and find new ways. (:
