Have you ever read Into The Wild or seen the film? The guy Chris McCandless after he graduated give all his money to Oxfam, got rid off all his ID and basically went into the wild to live of the land. Amazing stuff. I guess this is pretty similar only not quite as drastic. People who are saying he has lost his mind are looking at it the wrong way. As Chris McCandless said:

Anyway everyone should read the book and watch the film, amazing stuff and will change the way you think about life. My signature is actually a quote from Into The Wild. Here are some other of my favourite quotes from it, hopefully they will change your mind about this:

Fight Club was a great movie, but even greater novel.

Just the concept of owning less in life is fantastic. Do you really need all these things? If you do, you're more than likely compensating for something.

One thing most don't realize is that most well to do people live beyond their means. Basically what John just did was rid himself of depreciating assets to go travel for however long he wants. He can't afford to have all those assets plus go globetrotting (Hence he is not in the super rich tax bracket). When he is ready to settle back down he will be able to. Travel is expensive and John knows this.

He just played you game over! :)

Actually, it's much simpler...
Both John Reese and Frank Kern have well-developed survival instincts...
Reese just decided that in coming years it won't be safe to live in and do business from the US.
Just escapism ahead of bad times.
 
Best minimalist story/film is 'Alone in the Wilderness'. The story of Richard Proenneke. I bought the dvd and it is mesmerizing...

Reese is a master at creating traffic and his "experiment" is doing just that.

This will, of course, lead to a course/product offering which his minions will swallow hook, line, and sinker thus making him even wealthier.

I say, more power to him!
 
I thnk this is great. I have actually done something just like this. Quit my job, working in the oilfield and just traveled, sold all of my posessions and just left. I will never forget that.

Yeah that would be childish...if that were the core message of Fight Club.

But its actually about how lost a generation of men feel a drowning sea of consumerism. The fighting was there because they wanted to feel something. The buildings being blown up were faceless credit score corporations that held everyone hostage. The point of the movie was to take action. Do something real (as opposed to ordering more shit from Ikea) and scary (like starting a fist fight) and reject becoming another hapless pawn.

P.S. Yes the blowing up of buildings second half lost some of the momentum and meaning of the book. But what do you expect from hollywood,... it's also satire.
