Has John Reese lost his Mind??

If this is something he wants to do and it's a great idea for him, but it might not be for everyone. this is so very drastic that I wonder if he just had a really bad break-up or a soured business deal or a judgment from a lawsuit -- big life-changing stuff that he needs to just clear his head and pack it in for a while. It will be interesting to see what he comes up with good luck to him.

Nothing wrong with that, you think you'd be happy having everything like he does but after awhile you wouldn't be. Good for him if he actually is doing that.

it's not like he actually lost anything. he pretty much just liquidated all his posessions into his bank account. his business is still running. he could buy it all back if he really wanted to. when you're that rich you can afford to do crazy shit like this without any consequences. looks like he's just having some fun with his life :)

I still have all of my money and investments. I didn't pull[/I]
a Christopher McCandless ("Into The Wild") and burn all
of my money. This experiment isn't about that. So I still
have all of my businessess (and their assets) as well as
a valuable .COM collection, etc. etc.

Damn I would love to have enough money buy a camper van and just hit the road. Could never do what Chris McCandless done and give away everything and live off the land. Don't think I would survive a week. But would be cool to just be out there in the nature and stuff for a while! :)

How dare you?! If everyone lived through the mind of Tyler Durden we would all be better off.

Until we all shot ourselves in the mouth and blew up a bunch of skyscrapers

well this is like a PLAN bu you have to be where John stands to do something childish like this. I fullly agree with him, but lets go back and make money to reach where he is :)

BRB...

The message was childish but the film was slick.

So the movie was slick and childish?
I'm glad you are not a professional movie critic.
Maybe just stick to your confusion over Reese's email.

Until we all shot ourselves in the mouth and blew up a bunch of skyscrapers

Imagine if the whole world dropped everything and went off backpacking.

No disrespect but I don't think you have grasped the concept of Fight Club or the idea of what Reese is doing.

I love this. Something I've always wanted to do. Hopefully some day :D

So the movie was slick and childish?

Yes.

The core message was childish (start blowing up stuff and beat the shit outta people because you angry and bored with your life. wtf!!?)

The cgi special effects were good (for its time). The screenwritng was exceptional and the performances from the stars (esp. Ed Norton) were second to none and it had a kick-ass soundtrack too.

That's awesome, more respect to the guy :D

@blackma, you just didn't get the movie, that's fine but don't say Fight club is childish because of this. I've done the whole Fight Club concept. Fuck everything, throw it all out, do something with your life and what you WANT to do. Now, that's not directly the Fight Club idea but it's how I took it and what I did and now I'm so fkn happy in life ;) So don't say it's childish, maybe think first.

He's a marketer, therefore a liar and a attention whore.

I like minimalism, congrats to him. Nothing new under the sun...

I think Tim Ferriss was the first BSer that popularized minimalism.

In a way, what this guy is doing is saying: "look at me, I'm so powerful that I reached enlightment, I don't give a fuck about my possessions, I'm free of everything unlike you my follower, now I'll travel the entire world and work way less and earn way more while you are at the rat race and need to buy my BS products hoping to be like me one day".

I totally get it and I want to do the same soon (once I reach $10k/mo cash flow and have my business setup better/easier to manage). It is only a matter of mentality and belief system. What is powerful about it is that it is a CHOICE. If he or anybody decides to do it and then for any reason wants to stop, that is his/hers choice and not something imposed by life/situation. If you take 999 out of 1000 people and tell them, starting with tomorrow you only own this backpack and whatever money you have, they will freak out. Very few people will think "could there be something good in this?" and not panic and just be curious about how they will handle the situation. In a way I see it like an initiation journey like those you read about in stories with princes and fairies.

Imagine if the whole world dropped everything and went off backpacking.
Well obviously if everyone did it then nothing would be accomplished and the world economy would come to an end. The same thing can be said for what if everyone started doing IM fulltime, or trading stocks, or just about anything else. This is the kind of thing that only certain people are able to really do. Plus since all his business is done online, all he really needs is his laptop and internet connection.

...
I have nothing against it, I just thought it was weird coming from him. I thought it wasnt his style. He just comes off like a very stiff kinda guy.
At the right time in a persons life this kind of thing could be a great experience. Travel the world and experience new things.

That's probably why he decided to do it. This is the kind of experience that can actually enhance your life if you have the money to do it right. As long as you have plenty of money, it's not like someone going through a hardship. Most people can't do something like this, so if he wants to give it a go then more power to him.

Liar or not! It portrays to me the ultimate dream that money and success can provide!

Liar or not this is one motivating email to me and genius as well to distance yourself from the cliche' guru persona.

What does success and money ultimately provide? Complete and ultimate freedom to do whatever you want, whenever you want, and not stress about your decision. Freedom to me, is the ability to experience everything life has to offer to include people, places, cultures, and lifestyles as I damn well please.

If I didn't have a family this is EXACTLY what I would do. As a matter of fact, this is what I'd like to do but would have to be a little bit of a hybrid of this since I have a wife and 3 kids.

Awesome! Liar or not, go for it John, I couldn't stand your guru ass until I saw this email which totally did a "paradigm shift" of my perceived thought of what type of person he is/was.

Great email. First guru one I have actually read all the way to the end.

I have no doubt we will see a product down the line relating to "minimalism". :)

When we can simply go away, backpacking, that is not always a good sign... it can signify that we are alone, hopefully not the case.
