Just a small update ( and a lift for everyone who is interested in starting self-publishing) on my first e-book. It is live for around 36 hours and it has 170 free downloads. It's #1 on Top 100 Free for the sub-sub-category, #3 for sub-category and #20 for category also at Top 100 Free.
Will see how it goes when it will stop being free, but having almost 200 downloads in 2 days is more than I was expecting.

thanks for sharing your Kindle journey with us. I started thinking of publishing a book on Amazon yesterday and today I started looking for information about it, I'm glad I have found this post. I have read this entire thread and I read your other threads as well. Are you still giving away your how to e-book?? If you could it give it to me that would be a great help. I have understood the basic steps but I want to read everything again without unnecessary stuff. If you wish, you can PM me with the details about your guide. Thanks.

I published a kindle book about a year and a half ago in the health genre for $9.99 (after reading a crappy WSO from a guy who was supposedly making 6 figures out of kindle for 5 minutes work!). I didn't enroll the book in KDP Select (I don't know if they were doing those promotions back then). Anyway, I checked back on my account a few times and had sold nothing so I figured it was just more WSO b*llshit. Later on I tried to log back into my account but had forgotten my password so just left it and forgot about it - until this thread popped up. To cut a long story short, I finally tracked down my account and discovered that in roughly 18 months I had sold 6 copies @ $9.99! (Still no reviews, though)
So I brought the price down to $2.99 and enrolled it in KDP select for 5 days and posted it in a couple of free book news sites. 266 copies were downloaded and I got 1 really nice 4-star review out of it. That was about 10 days ago and since then have not sold a single copy.
According to another Kindle WSO I read, by a guy who is supposedly selling 200 books a day, you should be able to sell around 3 - 5% of your free downloads in the first month after your KDP select promotion. That means I should be selling about 8 books a month, but so far zero!
In the meantime, I have written 3 short books (I am a writer by trade) which I plan to publish starting today, and link together as they are a series, and see how that goes. Quite honestly, I'd be satisfied if I could sell 10 copies per title a month. I figure if you could build up a large enough catalogue, you could actually make a decent living on autopilot.
But for those of you who may feel a little discouraged (like me), here's something I found on Meathead's flipping site that may cheer you up and show you that making big bucks with kindle is possible! (This guy is selling his kindle business)

You have to select "Enroll in KDP Select" on the first page of the submission process. After you enroll in KDP Select, set your prices, and upload, then you wait for Amazon to review and publish your book.
After it's published, you can go back into KDP and manage promotions. That's where you can set free dates.

After reading this thread I knocked up a fiction book (about 30K words) gave it a nice cover and put it up with 5 free days I have another thread on making money - journey if you want to see the whole process.
BUT, after 5 days (today is the last one) I have had 1120 downloads (seem to be getting 1 dl every 2 min or so), number #1 on sub/sub/sub category #50 on category and #503 in top free, tomorrow is the big day I guess.

My book was blocked because I assembled it from PLR articles
As it should be! That stuff doesn't help anyone. Write original material or outsource it. The days of PLR ebooks working are long gone...

Good job! 1120 downloads should translate into some sales to give you momentum (provided you've priced it right). Curious to see how you're sitting at the end of today.

I have finished the fiction book as well....75 pages, around 35k words, will have to re-read it and finish the format and it's good to go.
The non-fiction book I already posted got 400 downloads in 4 days, #1 in sub-sub-sub category, #3 in sub-sub category, #5 in sub category and around #1300 in top free.

Thanks for the great tips on your success with Kindle publishing. As you mention in your OP, alot of people including myself ten to shy away from the Kindle platform because it's so time consuming. From what I gathered in your post, having a system set-up where you can publish the books effectively and in a timely manner is the key to having success with this system!
