Google Vs Spammers

I've always been told spammers will get penalised by google. Is this really true?
Over the past few months I've seen a couple guys spamming this sh*t out of literally every site in my niche including mine and gets the top space for the most popular keyword.
So around 3 months have past and they have been number 1 spot for close to two months... Does this mean its a myth that google demotes spammers and the myth was created by spammers so they can go on and carry on what they're doing while we are to scared to attempt it?

they were using shortened urls and not their own if that makes a difference.

Sometimes it work and sometimes your site will get totally deindexed or sandboxed doing so. I have tried this with an 2 y.o website and it was working just fine while when I do this with new projects / websites they get deindexed. It depends also how the spam links are build and where.. if you get them all from Adult and Pharamacy sites you will get more bad then good

So this also means that some one can spam using your url and you will most probably get deindexed? but if you're lucky google will throw you to #1 like those lucky sobs. I still wont do it though.

As Ruth said sometimes it may go good but once they are caught they will be surely penalized or will be blocked

it works only temporary. the risk of getting penetra-- ahhh i mean penalized is of course high.

except this site has lots of authority. i have one authority brand website (3 years old) which survived lots of neg. SEO. I am talking about 200k shitty backlinks. This website is still in the Top 5 for a few keywords after several google updates. The authority must be the main reason why it didn't get penalized.

There's no telling what kind of penalties it will impose in the future.

Right now you might think that spammers are just dominating your niche, but believe me, this is going to be temporary.
