So today google released an update about backlinks.

They say they created a robot, that will scan all your backlinks, and if there are ANY backlink that seems bought, spammy, unnatural to your content traffic and site they will remove all the rank gains that you got from those links.

Update rolls out in the following two weeks.

merry Christmas for all backlink buyers and sellers / sincerely google.

well yea so they discount the links they think are unnatural. depends how they decide that.. if its as "good" as their content spam detection, no need to worry lol
well since there is a manual report option, competitors will report each other to death.

Two weeks till its fully implemented I guess we wait and see.

There is 0% chance this rolls out right at Christmas, by accident.

either it’s bs and does nothing or a huge deal breaker and they don’t want to customer support so they chose this date

true its gonna be a mess for them to review all the reports :D
They are already furious about the GPT3, since in the last weeks as I could imagine it, the ai content ratio could have doubled, meaning millions of AI generated articles that are not really easy to identify.
When Google representatives speak, I have to hide my lie meter.
Yea, and with this statement they rolled out today, they admitted that all their previous “backlinks don’t matter” was a lie.

I understand that perhaps no one will agree with what I'll say :-
Effective SEO is becoming more difficult for people, because people are doing SEO based on what Google's officially announcements are.
For example, let us ASSUME that Google officially announces that backlinks will not or no longer impact SEO, then it is not necessary that Google's tech team has effectively tweaked their algorithms to follow what Google has officially announced.
The WORST way to do SEO (NOWADAYS), is by following what Google officially announces about SERPs, etc, because their algorithms have become so complex, that they themselves are unable to effectively roll out updates that "behave" in the expected manner in their algorithms. So, most of Google's updates (since the last 2 years), are only on "paper" and not in actual action as far as their algorithms go.
And any actual changes occuring in SERPs, is due to Google's tech people simply tinkering the algorithms in their attempts to match what Google mentions (from time to time) on "paper". So, people as such think that any changes in SERPs is due to "that latest Google update".

Could be, but the manual report is another thing, not confirmed if that’s manual reviewed or not.

if there will be manual review for hand made reports, then it’s gg for backlink abusers.

The part I don't get is how they'd handle the sheer of number of reports anyone would expect them to get. They will be bogged down by thousands, probably within days if this is all true and as they say it'll be.

Imagine if Google really found a way and punished all link buyers, doubt there'd be many sites left
Honestly, disagree, let’s take my recipe websites, I got like 20 of them. 80-90% of my competitions since I’m Germany based, have no backlinks they are old sites a few of them not even mobile optimized. So only the competitve business websites would disappear and mostly the English ones

I mean for years they did Adsense approvals manual.

Matt Cutts will be punished first if update is for real , as of now it sounds like a joke
It is difficult for them to defferntiate natural and unnatural back links
