Google update again?!

I could believe that except,

1,Ahrefs says I do not rank for other keywords.

2,Google console shows an upward trend of clicks for the website for the same days 23rd - 28th, no tailoff, but the wordpress stats say there was a dramatic drop in clicks.

The 2 totally contradict each other. Very strange.
Also on the 28th march, google changed the submit to indexing page, it closed the old one, and forced users to use the new page. wonder if it has anything to do with it.

1. Ahrefs can't and doesn't track all the keywords.

2. Stats may be getting skewed because of your plugin.

Quality of backlinks, like I told you folks long back.

the more I look at the work that I have done over the last 6-9 month, I do agree with you. it is about the quality of backlinks. Even a no-follow backlink from a High DA means a lot.

I coincidentally had a huge drop after the Yoast plugin issue where it started redirecting images to themselves and then unknowingly got hundreds of random pages indexed on Google.

The updates last week doubled my traffic overnight, but it is still not fully recovered. I just left the site alone until now. I am going to try and get some backlinks slowly and see if anything good happens.

It has nothing to do with quality of backlinks

Its like @fb3003 said:

1 - keyword density up like your competitors
2 - Add more backlinks with exact anchors
3 - Add more content to your inner pages

Which is the same of what I suggested before, google dropped the weight of their rankbrain .. its like going back in time where you need to build many pages for same keyword + exexa backlinks

My only problem is, how long will google hold this update .. first page reaults are a mess and full of spam! I get same websites ranking for same keyword in top 3 position with 3 different pages!!!! I am afraid to edit my websites according to new update, google activates rankbrain again, and Boom!

Yes agree with your points, I notice this in my niche too....
Now it's really confuse, if i build exact anchor text and over optimize contents, and when rankbrain active, ranking will lost.

Idea, do 2 sites, one with exact anchors mostly and one with generic anchor and naked url's?

Sure, if you are competing in a niche where you are ranking with 2 - 10 backlinks, it's a great plan

But, when you were ranking for +100 backlinks keyword, then you can see where the problem is

1. Backlinks are everything.
2. Rank is now based on sitewide score of a site, specific (good) content is secondary.

I have a pretty funny ongoing situation:
- certain big site stole a bunch of my media articles in as-is form (title+text+pic+ video), lets say they are all related to "fancy keyword"
- my site lost rankings for "fancy keyword"
- they are now on first page for "fancy keyword" with my article "fancy keyword one"
- naturally, I do a google DMCA and google removes it
- they are once again on first page with my article "fancy keyword two"
- after 10 or so cycles of DMCAing it, I stopped, pointless

Which leads me to following conclusions:

1. Thief site got enough backlink juice to GET THAT SPOT for "fancy keyword" no matter what
2. Articles they stole from me aren't even all that spectacular, they would get that spot even with a blank page with H1 "fancy keyword"
3. points 1 & 2 efficiently prove that it is all about sitewide backlink juice and you'll rank high with just about any content, even duplicated one

BONUS conclusions:

1. Google DMCAs do NOT hurt a website ranking
2. Google doesn't care about duplicate content, they simply put the stronger site first and bury the weaker one, regardless which one had the content first

1 - we are not talking about google and SEO, we are talking about a specific algorithm

2 - you are the only one who thought google has a problem with duplicate content, we don't!

3 - your case doesn't affect us, we are here discussing the algorithm that affected 64 pages worth of members!

4 - you can't rank with blank page unless all your competitor has blank pages!

5 - site don't have scores, sites have specific niche scores. And single page score weights way more than whole website score. However, this doesn't mean you can rank with 1 page website against bigger ones

6 - Backlinks has the biggest weight 60% at least which again is common knowledge and no one is debating that

3 - your case doesn't affect us, we are here discussing the algorithm that affected 64 pages worth of members!

I didn't write "my case" because I expect help. I wrote it because it clearly illustrates what google is all about for a while now - sitewide ranking.

6 - Backlinks has the biggest weight 60% at least which again is common knowledge and no one is debating that

Considering it is 2019 now and even free wordpress templates got solid on-site seo, I'd dare to say backlinks give 90% of seo juice nowadays.

4 - you can't rank with blank page unless all your competitor has blank pages!

That was just a pretty obvious way of saying that site seo score is way more important than content of the ranking page. Duh.

yes if 100 + backlinks then it's problem, in my niche it's 20-22 backlinks. i may try for my other site that ranking on 2nd and 3rd page

i will do following

1: Increase content length, and ll check h tags of competitors , put video in contents (in short ll make content better then competitors)
2: Do exact match anchors on PBN, not all , but more or equal to competitors.

2nd case is, wait for 1st site, that was ranking. i hope google must fix that

What is that even supposed to mean ?

Because a website is built with WordPress means its content is perfect, keyword research all good and done, site speed perfectly optimized, etc. etc ?
What is your definition of "on-site" SEO ? I regularly see WordPress sites with multiple h1s on their page, h1 identical to URL and to <title>, no meta-description, page takes 10 seconds to load...
I don't even know what to say lol

Actually, using Wordpress out of the box is a GUARANTEE to hit the over optimization penalty. You have to make many tweaks to make it acceptable from On-page perspective.

I just didn't feel like replying above as I like to choose to choose my discussions, other than that, its just a useless argument that will do bad more than good.

What kind of over-optimizations are you thinking about ?

All I'm saying is - a 50$ annually host and a 30$ template and all the issues you listed are a nonsense.
Of course there are people on 1$ hosts with free themes from 10y ago, but those are very rookie mistakes and not applicable to an average webmaster, imho.

That is the only thing I agree with you it seems.

So ANYWAY...

Say whatever you want but my case from above clearly shows that google gives that site a "reserved" spot for whatever they toss in there with that specific keyword. Purely based on overall site seo score / backlink juice.
They were #4-5 for that medium keyword with all the pages I removed via dmca and they are there right now with some other crap, even after all the removals.

Is it even worth building a new website at the moment?
No. The serps are now a caste system dominated by big brands.

Scary but true.

These alone are enough to destroy any keyword density and trip over optimization penalty, not to mention dozens of same pages with very similar content scattered everywhere... Look for a guide created by a member named phpbuilt. Its the on page optoptimizat bible of the forum.

Sorry man but I've studied many e-commerce websites, who get around 10k organic visitors monthly + at least 10-20k followers on their Instagram, and a lot of them still haven't got the basics right :
  • URL = H1 = TITLE >> This is probably the most common mistake I see.
  • URLs fucked up by all the /category/ or /article/ and even /blog/post/ that the great majority of them still have in them.
  • No META-DESCRIPTION on the majority of their pages.
  • Blog tags pages indexed.
  • Too many URLs indexed in general. (a lot of them even got the pages with parameters like ?color=, ?page= still indexed...)
  • Site speed is shit, especially on mobile (and I'm not talking about only the homepage) >> Super common aswell
  • ETC.
  • ETC.

But after that I'm from France so maybe the guys out there are behind what you can see in USA, this I can't say.
