Google update again?!

It's easy to have my links re-crawled but how do you get google to re-crawl those spam links?
There are many possible ways. Google will crawl a page if there is a link pointing at it, so you could either build links directly to them, or place them on a page you control (web 2.0) and build links to that page. There is a limit to how many links Google will crawl from one page. I usually work in batches of 50-100. Or you could buy a cheap domain that already has links to it (an RD20?), and place link lists on the home page of that.

I have a friend who was affected by the Aug 1 update. He is in the health niche and has really awesome content. Far better than websites ranking for his terms. He did some GSA blasts last year but has disavowed all the links around one month ago. I am really surprised why his pages do not rank. There are 3 pages that rank in top 5 apart from that nothing out of approx 1000 pages he has indexed.

He came to me for help and I am really clueless about how to help him. He's wondering if he should get links from authority websites. He hardly has any backlinks. Maybe a couple nofollows from reddit.

This article, "Google Redefines What is Considered Low Quality Content," came out when people started to see fluctuations...
I know many hatters here will roll heir eyes, but it's a nice sum-up for those going the authoritative or white-hat route...

so you wanted to rank with "hardly any backlinks", did I read this correctly?
of course content alone is not enough in competitive niches.

Trying to rank with no links is like trying to win the election without any votes.

Ranking with no links may work on some very specific, low traffic keywords.

did somebody have a real solutions for this update. I have no rankings anymore

Matt Diggity:
"Google recently gave some more insight into the latest algo update. They’ve said 3 things that are worth knowing. The first thing is, it’s not you… it’s them."

“these are general algorithm updates that we make from time to time with regards to search. And it’s not like your site is worse or different in any way. It’s essentially our algorithms are re-evaluating what we think makes sense what we think is relevant for search results for specific queries and users.”

"So, your site might not have changed but the way Google perceives your site when compared to competitors and relevancy might have changed.

And the relevancy point is the 2nd issue.
Google has spent a lot of time assessing the types of content users click on when they make specific searches. They’ve now used that data to redefine what they think people are looking for when they make a specific search.

Thirdly, the change is user relevancy.
Google is now including more historical data in their search on a user by user basis. In other words, one user might get a slightly different set of results compared to another depending on their search history.

This could have major implications on ranking for certain websites..."

^^ The rise of AI in search...so it will get harder and harder to pinpoint what precisely affects sites during an update.
Make clean sites for the users, that would be the conclusion (nothing new, just that google is smarter about it (or think they are)).
2 cents.

That last part is interesting. Some site owners report higher rankings but lower traffic. So even if one program says you're top 3 for a keyword - it doesn't necessarily mean you are top 3 in every single user search, especially since most chrome users don't browse incognito by default.

What the heck i had 2 sites and the content is almost the same but one ranks so good and another is shit....

An interesting way to see how the new algorithm works is looking at really shady niches without any reputable sites covering the topics/keywords. Looking at the top results in these niches, they are totally different from before the update, almost all pages ranking are parasites on hacked sites. Content quality doesn't seem to matter, content length doesn't seem to matter, it looks like it's all about the overall topical relevance (fitting the broader niche of the assumed search intent) of the domain itself plus, not mandatory, a certain authority.

@nimdekvan: Assuming the content itself doesn't really matter, what's the big difference of the sites? Expired domains, one formerly already fitting your niche, one not?

I read every post and article aboutthis august update.
So far there is no fix. Meand my competitors. More then 10 small and bigs sites are affected

Everybody talk about eat. Eat. Eat

Butno one really know what happen

The difference in domain age is only 1 year.
Right now, i can only think of 3 main reasons for the difference in ranking.
1. The site structure
Even though the site ranking better is almost 1 page site ( it actually has 5 pages including contact us, but the main content is on 1 page)
But site no.2 is somewhat construct in a bad way. It was designed to be silo but as times went by I find it hard to do silo site plus a sale page for my own product.
When I changed the menu it suddenly got hit by google...not really sure if it was a co-incident or what.

2. Backlinks quality
When I was building site no.1 I was a real noob (still a noob though) and I did everything manually like answering all questions in forums and linked back to my site.
And at that time the site is quite popular. I even got 2 backlinks from my competitors and they both are on page 1 (Yes, you read that right. They both disappeared from the serp now)
The 2nd site I got lazy and bought all the shit from BST....wait I become even more noob than before.....

3. The contents
Both are unique. I wrote them from scratch. But the structure of content is the same. The big difference here is that no.1 has 200 comments which make it almost 15,000 words

Anyway, in this specific case i do think the backlinks quality is more important.
But come to think of it. If the backlink quality was really the case then why after a very long time... site no.1 got back from #60 to #5 ???
This must be something else judging my site again and now it thinks that my no.1 has more authority in that specific keyword. maybe.

Thanks for your feedback, interesting but mysterious. I don't think it's about site structure, same for links, the big loser DrAxe has gazillions of really impressive links, including quite a few real editorial .edu links. So, what's left is #3, some sort of on-site social proof for popularity/proof of interaction with visitors/proof of knowledge/FAQ with user generated content. On the other hand, some huge sites relying on UGC dropped, so quality of the UGC is probably a factor...

They both are products review site. Maybe now google algorithm can determine which kind of Faqs users are really after?
Sorry, this is not getting anywhere lol. It's just 1 site we're talking about , not enough sample set.

Wait for a week or two, I know it's hard but if you have a good website with a good content just give it some time. One of my pages that was ranking 4-5 for 7 related keywords took a dive on the 11th with most of them being pushed to the second page of SERP. Today things are coming back to normal and most keywords have recovered, meaning they rank where they were before the 11th.

Strange things are happening. I have started getting organic traffic from Google. But, I don't see my website in the top 10 pages for relevant keywords.

Is there a new update again? My site was on #1 for several keywords but there are gone now since today.

Yep, there were several days with unusual ranking flucuations, started around 09/06/ and continued till about 09/13/ depending on country. Especially 09/11/ in the US. Looks like Google did some adjustments to the update. I bet we'll see more of this volatility soon since SERPs for some terms still look very strange.
