I personally use DDG about 95% of the SERP searches I do nowadays, Google is just showing trash/wrong results. And don't get me started on Googles captcha locker EVERY TIME you do a search (if you're on a VPN).
One update would be that the US administration has officially opened a lawsuit against Google.

GSC just updated backlink database.. I had 1000 incoming links for one of my site before the previous link update.. Now it's 1700 but only 20 actual new links.
I wonder if this was also part of their indexing issue and they are now just displaying the links that they accidently dropped and deindexed, thus resulting the sites to drop as well or its another glitch in their system.

Well for me it looks like Google went back to whatever they were doing before the last update.
Reversal?
My rankings went back to what they were 2 updates ago.

Third day only? At almost 6 month-mark here of daily keyword bleeding and still dropping. Nobody has found a solution yet.. just hope that the end of the US elections may trigger a new update from Google. A positive one, hopefully.
Well that's for you, my site is still down. Started in January and every effort to recover has been a futile one. I'm focusing on what matters more to me now.

Well yeah it's "for me", bc I can only speak for myself. But I happen to run lots of sites for lots of clients in lots of niches, thus I usually am able to detect large changes.
The pattern seems to be of an earlier update in 2020.
Seeing all these "indexing" problems that Google has acknowledged, I think it's like when racing drivers say they had "electrical" issue.
It's a generic catch-all term they use because they can't come out in public and say their artificial intelligence rankbrain really hasn't been able to perform like their old system used to.

Sorry for an out of context question but what do you tell your clients when their sites go down? Do they understand that their sites can tank due to an update and that you can't do much to get the rankings/traffic back?

You are right. It is unlike Google to take this long to fix things. They have taken longer this time, and they don't seem to have an exact timeline on when the services will resume.
