So I have been doing SEO for my client for Google Maps for the past 2 months now and it has been going pretty well considering I just started learning Maps.

The organic results are doing really great, and so are the maps results but there is a small problem that is causing a lot of business loss.

The first problem is that all of the business in the top 7 are doing either spam or black hat to get listed. They have almost no reviews and citations, I guess the keyword category spam is the trick they are doing from what I see.

But the bigger problem is that when you click for 'more results' I appear in the top 7 on F, but when you search it normally I do not appear on F but another business does.

So this has gotten me really confused for some reason because I've never seen this.

Any thoughts?

It sounds like you haven't updated on the engines yet, as you have realtime in the ' more results ' area. Give that some time.

As for the issue of the maps and spamming, don't do it, just up your game in the seo of your maps project. You simply haven't gottent it together yet but keep trying and working it. Maps is still relatively knew, as it has been around for a while but is new in the regard that google has just recently set the standard algorythms for working it into social/viral media marketing and search use.

Look into learning mashups and the like, incorporating maps into your seo is good but up your game by intergrating it into your site as a reflective tool for your marketing. It will boost both your maps position, as well as your keyword ranking position very quickly...there is a great book on the topic called " google mashup cash ". Check it out.

You will have to use some minor programming or hire someone to do it for you but the effort is WELL worth it. I've been doing this since maps upgraded and it has worked well for me.

Investigate mashups and mixing maps into your site system.

Yeah my SEO techniques are quite high on the bar, not to brag or anything. So it is a great idea to mix up with Google Maps and see how that goes.

I will definitely check out that book right now and have a look at it.
 
Hmm I gave it a go on Google but didn't have any eye opening results for the book (e-book), but this post is already indexed in there, which is quite funny.
 
I would give it more time. If it is a competitive niche, it can take more time that 2 months. Plus Google doesn't seem to update it as much as natural listings. It is like waiting for your PR to increase:)

Here are some things you can do to propel your listing to the 7 box.

1) Look to see where the competitors citations are coming from. Mirror them.
2) Use Doc sharing sites, like Docstoc, and Scribd. Make sure you include the address (most important). I see guys putting complete garbage up, but GOogle loves those sites. They are also very liberal with anchor text.
3) Use keywords in the reviews. Make them look natural. Obviously make sure you change IP with each when creating the reviews.
4) Use sites like InsiderPages.com, Citysearch.com, and even Yahoo Local (Google is pulling data now from them). Most of these are direct data feeds and seen as trusted by Google. You will see some of the best listings, have lots of data pulled form these sites.
5) Try to keep it white hat as possible. Google will eventually catch onto the spammers, and already have in a lot of niches.
6) Be patient..Shit takes time with competitive niches.

I believe he was talking about "Google Maps C. A . S . H". Do a search in the download section. You will find it there.
 
Thanks for the advice and clear explanations, really appreciate this. Working on it right now to give it some juice for later time.

Yeah, I noticed that as well that Google Maps really takes quite some time to show the updates.

heh...yep, same book. Thanks for that assist there. Posted another great one that will help with the workings of mashups. As a coder, I find them fun to do but, for a novice to them, they may be a little complex to implement.
 
You can add your clients business details in various(more)authority business listings. I am doing this way to beat the competitors, even though its new business listing.

Which listings? I'm doing well with Gmaps, and have a few one boxes but am having a hard time getting in for 2 competitive keywords.

I am always against giving away personal ways and techniques but since people are sharing here I will give some personal input as well.

I have been listing my business as adviced above for 2 months now in authority business directories, since I am in Canada mostly Canadian ones.

Also I try to fit in my business address, phone, postal code and of course name anywhere I can to test out what works. Whether it is on comments or other posts that I write.

The technique I started applying now goes something like this:

Buy 10 .info domains about your business. For example Toronto Furniture Store.

Then you go to Google Maps and search other furniture stores in other cities such New York, Moscow, Tokyo and so on. Get their phone, address, website and business name.

Then when you get these domains all set up quickly in Wordpress for example you use this information in posts. Also add the entire map so it the site looks more alive.

You want to do this of course so Google doesn't know that the site is specifically for your business, yet when you post those other business it is not in direct competition so you only win, and you do them a huge favor for + karma in life.

If you want to ad local directories, just put "Free Business Directory City" and you will find tons of them.
 
Arg, lol most of those are for US only, or maybe at least the ones that I chose at random. But yeah the search method does work quite well I just tried it.
 
Yeah well for the US people are more lucky because they have the automated Universal Business Listings which they can use. This literally makes your life a lot easier...
 
Ah then you are in the same boat.

Yeah outsourcing isn't that expensive you can hire someone for $300 a month to do something specific that you want, but that is the lowest I have seen and don't expect good English or a premium service.

This is good pay for those countries so don't worry about that I went through it with the person I was paying...apparently a bank manager there gets $1000 a month.

Although I personally don't outsource before I feel it is more work to keep track of everything then to simply do it yourself. At first you might want to check and it might be fine, but after they might get sloppy and you might stop checking before you trust them.

This happens when they get more clients...and they usually use robots and automation to do their work which you can do yourself for 1/4 of the price of a one time payment.

So overall I don't really see a point in doing it at all...especially if it is client work like for Google Maps. I'm too much on the ethics side to give a portion of my clients money to someone who doesn't really care (in most cases).
 
Well I charge my clients $300-$600 per listing, and I pay my guy $25 to do the citations. To me that is worth it. Honestly even if it where automated, that is one more thing I have to worry about.
